Issues with screw-in "Boston" valve

I checked my pump nozzle this evening and the problem is that the nozzle isn't a tight enough fit. Even when pushed in all the way the nozzle is barely tight in the valve.

Some older pump nozzles barely fit. I find that if you sand them quite a bit then they work. Or just find a different brand pump with a nozzle that fits. The push in Boston valve works pretty well with the right nozzle.

I agree these valves are much better to use.
I'm not totally sure they fit all previous valve seats?

True, if you have a "new" pump and/or kitevalve, it will often not fit very well and pop out too easily, I was swearing a lot years ago when having the first of these....

When used and roughed up, it sits a lot better, so problem wears off in time.

My latest kites from Storm Kites, has this special Boston type valve that can be mounted on any Boston Valve kite, but a lot better as it will never pop out because you just click the hose end directiy onto the valve so fixed.

Think others use it too, Cabrinha and Slingshot?

Get an adaptor that fits snugly without going all the way in, rough it up with some 200 sandpaper, hold the valve and give the adaptor a slight twist when putting it in. I have a North pump and Ozone kites, never had a problem (pump my kites up to 8-10psi).

Cant you just put some duct tape round the end of it to fatten it up slightly, make it grippier, and provide a better seal?

I've done this using duct tape and it seems to have fixed the problem, but it seems like a bit of a botch and a temporary fix. I feel like the tape will peel off eventually.

Unfortunately I cannot find any replacement pump nozzles in UK shops... there are a few options on Ebay, but postage from the USA or Australia is silly expensive.

Boston valves are used by inflatable kayaks and canoes such as Aquaglide, and by inflatable caravan and motorhome awnings such as Kampa. Also with pumps sold by Decathlon. So try calling around to get some spare Boston valve adaptors, give wetsuitoutlet.co.uk a try.

But to be honest I would expect any kite shop to have these.

ATB kiteshop in the UK sell them.... think they are aftermarket. Received mine last week.

Pins / prongs on the valve unfortunately don't 'swivel / fit' all the way into the fixings on my WMFG pump but doesnt seem to come detached.

Used it twice, first time it stayed in the kite valve no problem, second time kept popping out, seems to fit snug, so think I will try the sand paper method just to take some of the smoothness off.

Semi-related fun fact about boston valves: below the screw in mechanism, there's a little black rubber washer. Lose that and it won't seal any more ... and you may think a bladder repair is needed. I didn't have my 8m for part of Maui trip because of it, doh.

Better to keep the valve screwed back in at least part way between uses, so it doesn't fall off.

For my missing washer, I pulled one off an old air mattress, fit perfect, back on the water quick without further drama.
