Re: Ram airs crash in 2019

2020 is approaching. It's time to look at the failure of ram air kites this year with 20/20 vision.

Despite a multitude of ridiculous claims from ram lovers, ram airs cRaSHeD.

A well-known designer for ram-air-central, i.e. FLYSURFER, had this to say:
“… it’s the Tube-kite that stands victorious. From a designer’s point-of-view it shines in every aspect; its simplicity in design is the key to controlling its complexity. Tube-kites rule most of the sport-related requirements… Soft-kites have an approximate market share of 4%, meaning that 96% of all kites sold worldwide are Tube-kites. This figure basically validates the success of the concept. Without being too sarcastic, you have to be a believer to think that Soft-kites are the future of the kite market…”
For the full epiphany and admission, please check-out this link: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2400039

It's interesting to note that NO ram airs..... no NOT ONE (!)…. feature anywhere near the top of world rankings in ANY discipline on the GKA World Tour https://www.gkakiteworldtour.com. Ram airs cRaSHeD in Freestyle, Wave, and Speed disciplines.

The same ol’ problems keep recurring: the low-end of large rams is 7-8 knots at best. Ram airs are INFERIOR on downwind legs (collapsing, bow tying, etc). Ram airs really suck in gusty conditions and downwind of obstacles. They are positively lethal in cross-offshore conditions. Relaunch is a NIGHTMARE. Ram airs suffer rapid obsolescence through stretching, bridle deformation, and by being superseded by newer models. Last but not least, SAFETY is a real issue.

Ignore the LIES and exaggerations. Ram airs are grossly inferior compared to inflatables.

Cheers,

Pumpy :pump:

Have not seen a ram air kite all year, not one.

I think maybe the problems outweigh the benefits although those cheap online ones look interesting at those prices!

I carried a burst inflatable back to shore for someone today. It had crashed, and the rider was stranded. Big heavy thing it was. Inflatables continue to fall out of the sky and crash in 2019.

Time to push the climate angle.

Due to the longer lifespan of foil kites they will reduce your carbon footprint! Now if that concerns you and you are worried by saving money and not having to buy a new kite and so potentially you are not doing your bit for the environment to help stave off the next ice age, well you can always collect some of the bountiful amounts of plastic in the ocean and burn it to stay warm during the increasing cold and so save even more money! No doubt too the ocean wildlife will thank you, right before they are collected by Chinese ships and put in cans to send to the ever growing population of Africa. Over population in Africa? I hear your worries! Don't worry Western leaders have a solution for that too. Slowly lower the African population by using it to replace the Western population, with a wonderful thing called immigration! We need you Europeans to stop having kids now so we can humanly control the population of Africa!

Have not seen a ram air kite all year, not one.
It depends where you kite

My local spot has about a dozen riders who use foils......and in the summer went to Lac de Serre Poncon in the Alpes and it was about 50:50 with up to 30 riders on the water at any time.

Same here-most hydrofoilers use foil kites but it is not the open sea so maybe that is why?
