What is the smallest kite you can waterstarst in 10 knots?

Postby jumptheshark » Mon Nov 11, 2019 5:32 pm

Impressed with the people claiming they go with a Peak 4 5m in 10 knots.

Would like to hear:

The kite and how challenging you find it to waterstart in 10 knots.

Pretty helpful to also know:

Your weight.
Your wing size.
Your line length.

a peak kite is very light, 5m or 10m, it can waterstart in 10knots and less wind.

with a hydrofoil, good skills, and light weight... kiting is doable.

Peak4 5m - 86 kg naked - ONDA 633 - 25 m lines - no volume board

Its challenging and not very fun. Prefer other kite in 10 knots. But definitely possible

10 knots I am using peak 8 meter. Too much of a struggle with the 5 meter.

68 kg, 1100, 23 meters

I'm 74 kg, With Onda, 9 m kite (2010 year edition, weight only 2.7kg !, kite super fast as in such size) on 27m lines, goes from about 8-9 knots, 10 knots very easy.

8m enduro is easy but it's fairly boring and unpowered in 10 knots.

I may have water started in 10 knots in my 6 reo in failing wind. But can't verify that. I wouldn't ever openly seek to fly the 6 reo in winds that light.

75kg birthday suit
550cm2
25m standard ozone lines
No volume pocket board.

7 m2 LEI needed in 10 knots.

77 kg
1100 or 1200 cm2 wing
26-27 m lines

Not possible on smallest board though, need my medium board.
And underpowered so would choose a 9 m2 in 10 knots.

In this wind there is not much wind down at the surface when you loop the kite down...

With a 5 m2 LEI i need 12 knots to ride, but too small for fun usually.

Assume you ask about the smallest size possible to waterstart and foil, and not what we choose?

65kg
Peak4 5m
Moses Onda 633
21m lines
No volume 125cm board
8 to 10 knots is fine in our seabreeze where the wind is very constant. Great for riding waves, rolling swell/wind chop. Very relaxing in these conditions. No problem water starting when you're familiar with the kite and have the depower adjusted appropriately. Very important not to oversheet the kite. Longer lines will help with heavier riders.
