Cheers Peter,
When I decided to build a hydrofoil my goal was to ride this wave. Yesterday I achieved that goal. What did I learn?
I was on the 4m in 25 knots so perfectly powered for the 4. Wind was cross off as with this photo. Wave size about the same but cleaner.
Big waves are so much faster have so much more energy than the small waves. I was cranking at speed just to keep up with the swell. When I turning onto the face to run down the line the speed was intense.
It was just too fast for my foil/skill level. I could hold it for maybe 20,30 seconds and then I'd do a high speed crash or have to pull off the back of the wave.
I'm thinking that big waves like this will need a high aspect foil (I'm running mid aspect similar to Moses Fluente) so you can run incredibly fast along the face.
None the less I rode the beast and know that it is possible. I need to improve my high speed riding and maybe make some higher aspect wings and get more comfortable running at speed if I want to ride these monsters.
