Different kites in different sizes quiver

Postby Rob112 » Tue Dec 03, 2019 7:47 pm

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but recently I've been speaking to different people and stores who are suggesting building a quiver of different kites in different sizes rather than using an allround kite, which will always be compromised in some way. E.g. boosting kite like rebel for 12m, all around kite like evo for 9m and wave kite for the 7m.

Bit of info added - quiver would be for TT, SB and foil. SB is mostly small messy onshore choppy stuff.

I appreciate this will depend massively on people's individual riding styles, but does anyone do this?

This came about as I currently ride bandits, but now they've split it, think I might get a dedicated kite for riding a certain style in specific wind conditions.

my brother has a full quiver of pivots for boardoffs and a full quiver of torches for doing handle passes. My dream quiver is 10m and 14m enduro for handle passes and an 8m and 12m soul for board offs. You absolutely do NOT need a separate wave and boosting kite. The pivot is exceptionally well rounded and will do both so well it's probably better to have a full quiver of pivots, 6, 8, 10, 12. The compromise you make building a double quiver is that you have less kites for each wind range so for instance my jump is 4m that's a huge jump but can't get around it unless you want to be packing 6 or 8 kites every time you go kiting. There's this category of kite: hydrofoiling boosting wave riding board offs. It's flatter and doesn't have large wingtips. Then there's this category of kite: wakestyle, unhooked, megaloops. It has large wingtips but doesn't boost as well. It's only when you want to do both that you end up with a dual quiver. There are dedicated "wave kites" but I think the pivot is actually better than most dedicated "wave" kites for wave riding mainly because it has so much power for its size you get to size down more often. I can't speak towards the bandit one of the few kites I haven't demoed recently but there's got to be the same sort of kite in their lineup that does the same.

I'm riding line of Rallys 5/7/9/11 and I would replace 11 and 5 with SST or similar to be used primarily for foiling.
My main concern is I don't want to have two separate quivers for boosting and foiling and I don't want to travel with 7 kites in the bag.

So the smallest and largest kites would make sense being foiling wings and medium should be crossovers good for both kinds of riding.

Yes. It makes sense, particularly if you use a variety of boards/equipment (e.g., TT, foilboard, directional). As wind and/or water conditions change, board choices change, and so too do kite types/sizes/shapes.

I have a quiver of LEIs that I use for TT, but I almost always use a foil kite when riding my hydrofoil. On a directional, I prefer an LEI with more drift than those I use for the TT. I think a lot of people (particularly those who have accumulated lots of kites over the years) do something similar.

Now, if you're asking about buying a variety of kite types/shapes for a single board type (e.g., TT), it may not be as "essential" because most people tend to gravitate towards a single style of riding on a TT and, therefore, invest in a quiver of similar kites in different sizes to support their chosen style. But if, unlike others, you want to ride a variety of TT styles (airstyle, wakestyle, waves, etc.), then different types of kites in your quiver would be useful.

Bottom line: if more types of kites = more fun for you, then do it. :thumb:

@edt - how's the pivot for foiling?

@OBX - more kite, more fun, more angry Mrs when spent 1000s on kites! Haha

We all do it differently.

I went for years and years as a super minimalist. two current model kite quiver for everything. It was nice to only really have one kite and a small version for really windy days. Though I was mental if I happen to damage something. Today you could get away with a two kite quiver of Pivots in most places.

At some point, I started buying used kites and well, then got addicted. I started buying specialists instead of all rounders because that is where the great deals were.
I now have some crazy 12 or so kites from 3.5m up to 12. Loads of doubles. Like two 6's two 7's, three 8's and two 11's. But in real terms its a quiver of C kites, a quiver of wave kites and a quiver for hydrofoiling. With a few beaters for winter.

I liked being a minimalist, but I way prefer to have loads of kites, some that I am just not that concerned with so I always have the right tool for the day and plenty of back up, and a small kite for you too if you happen to forget yours.

I drive around with two kites in the car day to day. The same two all the time.

If you get into foiling in any real way, you will end up with a separate quiver for it.

I'm just down the coast from you in the eastern Solent. I have 6/8/10/12m Enduro V2s and tbh I really wouldn't want more kites, it's sometimes hard enough deciding between two adjacent sizes without bringing a second quiver into the equation! Used to have a surfboard with which the Enduros worked just fine but had to let it go because my left ACL doesn't like any twisting (have to wear a Donjoy Armor Fourcepoint knee brace).

um, its the board choice that determines what kite you go with. Though I have loads of kites that "could" do for any particular day, I choose what board I want to ride, and the kite choice just gets easy.

I like to keep it simple as I hate looking at kites that never get used. I have two kites only, a 7m Slash and 10m Boxer.

Use the Slash for wave riding with SB @ 16-30 knots.
Also use the Slash for Foiling from 14-20 knots.

Use the Boxer for Foiling from 10-15 knots.

Use the standard 24m line length with both. I am 87kgs. Been kiting since 2004. Still have the stoke.....😄
