Lots of litrexz! If no pull from the kite. Wave speed matters. Slow waves, and Slappysan does some good vids of how volume works if you have no pull from the kite. Go funboard!....with a kite. Longoboard is just a bit ridiculous, though slappy would disagree.

Oooooo, and pointy front prone surfboards actually do get some benefit from a pointy nose. But the kite really needs to be LE down on the water, and you need to be trying to turn to get away from running away running over the lines in that situation.

That would be completely dependant on your riding style.

The perfect downwinding board does not need to compromise to stay upwind. So it can be build with that single purpose of going down wind.

A wave kite would be ideal for down the line downwinder. You want a kite that will have really good drift. Then again this might be wave dependent. Our local waves are super mushy and we get really light winds due to a doming effect over the barrier island, and high humidity. So for me outside of a storm or the very few short weeks we get wind on the island my ideal board would be a foil and lightwind kite.

If new to waves the best kite and board combination is the one you are most used to. There will be enough new to draw your focus and attention that the gear you are comfortable with is best. If you already are comfortable in waves and are just looking to start downwinders, the board and kite will be the one you are most used to. There will be enough fun that you won’t need to be concerned.

Then select the best wave riding board for the waves you are riding. That will still be dependent on the types of waves, Are they one foot tiddlers? cranken cross off barrels? 6 foot peelers? or simply general crappy crud?
That will determine what you use.

Me. I would use my mutant or my hydrofoil. But my prefernce would be the mutant. Surf the wave in boost on the wave back out... oh... yeah..... that is my style of fun.

So, the answer to this question only you can answer. Only you know what you like and don't like.

a floaty superlight surfboard for ocean waves -purist performance, living the dream!

A diy directional “speed needle” 180x35, not as much top end as i hoped but but high averages and easy huge jumps with guaranteed buttery landings.

My old homemade paipo before I put extra carbon on it for foiling was flexy and gave up some low wind but shined in choppy downwinders. After 3 miles ddw on 2’ washboard chop I was psyched to go again, my friend on a fat/stiff fish directional was not.

Survival downwinders on nasty gusty winds have been fun on a high rocker twin tip. Riding toeside most of the way makes it super smooth, bleeds power and helps avoid the hot angles...
