Trailing edges don’t need to be dangerously sharp, especially for beginners.

Sorry about that.....you need to take baby steps with foil to avoid a disaster .... start with front foot in normal position and back foot forward a few inches from front foot. Now just focus on getting up and slogging around for a while till you are comfortable, maybe an hour or so. Now water start again with feet in position described above, build some speed and start to slowly move your back foot back keeping pressure on front foot, now that you are in proper position try very gently taken pressure off front foot and the board should start to climb, bring it back down and keep working on this till you can hover and get some sustained rides....Best tip I got when learning was to build some speed(nothing crazy)
The foil is a lot more stable with proper speed.....I see a lot of beginners trying to water start with their feet apart in a riding stance and they have a lot of crashes ... good luck!!!!!!!

Could also happen with TT and sharp fins.

Be happy it wasn't your face...

Get better soon !

Looks nasty but might have just been bad luck. Is your foil sharp, some foils are alot more dangerous than others. Foiling is definitely alot more dangerous on the first one or two tries.

That injury can also happen from a blunt strike especially when skin is soft from being in the water for a bit. I had my ankle sliced open deeply from a foil two years ago. The surgeon was pretty sure the skin was split open--like a strike from boxing--vs sliced open. Told me that soaked skin can tend to do that and it often looks similar to a slice. Regardless, after that I took 400 grit to all of the edges on my foil. I also wear booties and mtb gloves when foiling now. Basically, regardless of temperature I cover up. As it gets colder my covers get thicker.

I've landed hard on my foils hundreds of times, even doing hydrofoil wave surfing getting inside the washing machine. You either had really bad luck or your foils need to be sanded down. They shouldn't cut you if you land on them. The worst injuries on foils happen when for one reason or another you lose sight of where it is, then wham it comes out of nowhere. Try to keep an eye on where the board is when you crash.

Haha, that's what I thought as well... Looks like you did it yourself.. For me in the beginning the biggest risk is kicking your foil/mast (strut..) when trying to start or putting yourself into position (I kite in shorts and bare feet). Easily avoided as long as you keep the risk in mind though.
