just an idea,
so as not to weaken the front of the board too much by hollowing it out, depending on the grain of the wood.
with 1 inch wide slats, make a type of H beam with each slat.
where you want to lose weight but keep more rigidity.
It is easier to put reinforcements in foam.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were talking about by I beams but what do you thinking of routing a channel on both sides of each rib leaving a little wood in the middle. I was thinking of doing something like this around the mast base but adding square carbon fiber tubes. The rest of the board could have hollow channels. I wonder how that would compare in strength and weight to the square holes in my original picture...

I would say if you were going to do that. Then a sandwich construction, with foam (or end grain balsa) in the middle and paulownia sheet top and bottom would be even more effective at saving weight and less material wastage.

With all due respect, do yourself a favour and use a KISS approach.

It might sound shocking but I would never ever attempt to do something like this.

Why? B/c Paulovnia 12mm core it a tank when glassed both sides with light FG. Weight? Umm, maybe 3kg or Less?

Rocker can be made in a few ways too. One is to heat the strips with hot steam:

Cool idea. There are a zillion ways to hollow out the boards. You can use a router and jig it up to create and I-Beam with each one; just cut holes; cut holes and an I-beam. Whatever. Instead of carbon tubes just use dowels to align everything for the glue up. What will give it strength is the glass or carbon skin on the outside. The core material just keeps the skins apart. The further apart they are the stiffer the board will be. Let us know how it all goes and have fun with the build.

I'm not into board building, just wanted to chime in with few photos of a paulownia hollow core foil board made by a friend.
Chris builds mainly paulownia 'alaia' kite boards and is very open to sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues and DIYers.

P.S. pls don't criticise the fins, the initial idea was for a hybrid board usable as a directional if the wind picks up too much.

Trying to understand... your hull is 12mm thick and you steam the shape into the strips? Nice looking steam set up. I see what looks like a compressed air tank and a propane tank. How is the steam actually generated?
