Pranburi, Thailand

Postby captainbacon » Mon Nov 05, 2018 11:03 am

Hello everybody,

Looking to stick around SE Asia for a while and looking for a kiteable destination for April.

So, I happened upon Pranburi, Thailand, which apparently works in April because of thermals. Does anyone have any any experiences they can share, or perhaps suggest better, more reliable/better alternatives?

Cheers in advance!

I was a month in Thailand (pramburi, hua hin and koh phangan) in March 2014. Quite light winds, 12m @ 85 kg was never overpowered, usually underpowered.
But if you're not searching for strong winds, pranburi is a nice quiet place to visit. Koh phangan flat is one of the best kite spots where I have been, but maybe less windy days than hua hin/pranburi area?

For Thailand I would say that Pranburi (Pak nam pran) is the best place to kitesurf in March/April. Wind is usually blowing 15-20 knots in afternoon but can be lighter. Bring your biggest kites or even better foil board. For 80 kg rider on twin tip I would recomend 15/11 m2. It’s quite place, not touristic, with long wide beach. Lots of jellyfish. Two schools and nice kitesurfing community. You can enjoy great street food on every corner and in the restaurants. Cheap, safe, quiet place. Not so much to do after 9 p.m.

Anyone been to Pranburi recently? I'm heading that way soon and would like to know anything that is necessary (weather, restrictions, hazards etc). I will be there the last week of January.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Last time I was there in 2017. I think everything is still pretty much the same. Unfortunately end of January is not the best time for Pranburi. It’s end of north (gusty morning wind) season and beginning of south (thermal afternoon wind). Bring your biggest kite and board, if you are foiling even better. Lots of jellyfishes, water is warm.

I am leaving in Pranburi. If you have any questions, will be happy to help.
As mentioned before March April is our high season for thermal south wind.

Also this is hottest part of the year.

Great place for easy, steady thermals.
But jellyfish are a serious issue and you will end up buying some type of Lycra pants.
Might save yourself the trouble and take some good ones with you before hand.
Strongly recommend the Neosport Lycra Skin Suit" - you can get it from Leisurepro online for $30.00 - great investment in order to stay jellyfish safe!
The brown jellyfish are real scar leavers - you definitely want some Lycra;)

Thanks for the info! I will make sure I’ve got some protection from those jellies!
