naish pivot 3 set quiver: 12/9/7 or 12/9/6

Postby WillemsD » Sun Feb 09, 2020 3:02 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking to purchase a new set of kites and would like to inquire about the right sizing.

Few things about myself:
- Medium advanced kiter that is starting to learn more and more (old skool) tricks: front rolls, double back rolls, grab variations, big air, etc.
- 75-80kg (depending on work and the season :D) with a 138 TT board, 1.78m tall
- Home spots are Belgium (Knokke) and UK (Camber Sands / Brighton). These spots are fairly choppy with the majority of the winds between 10-30 knots
- Unfortunately, I get only get 5-10 sessions a year on my home spots. Hence I try to go on kite holidays twice a year (Morroco, Brazil, Madagascar, Mauritius) where winds are between 10-35 knots
- Current set of kites: Liquid Force Hifi (c-shape) - these were a bad purchase and are not suitable for my level. I'm not looking to progress into wakestyle/unhooked. My focus is oldskool, jumps and maybe a kiteloop someday :bye:

To the point:
Initially, I wanted to buy a Cabrinha Switchblade set containing a 12, 9 and 7m... However, I've read much about the Naish Pivot and I'm looking into these as well. Internet mentions that you should buy the Pivots 1m smaller than other kites. Hence the question: Would you go for 12/9/7 and have maybe better coverage of the sweet spot? Or should I add a 6 instead of the 7 so I can make sure I don't lose the high end (especially when I'm on holidays at the windier locations).

Last, how do you compare a Switchblade vs. a Pivot?

Thanks for reading my post! :thumb:

The ideal quiver in my eyes 12/10/9/8 got this and make the most of my 9/10 most of the time.

12 to cover low wind and 8 for 33kts +

I've got 6/8/10/12. Use for foil, SB and TT. I kite at Shoreham, Lancing and Goring.

Had Bandits before, prefer the Pivot. I'm 100kg and grunt of the Pivot suits be better.

@flysuring - what's your weight? What combination would you take in the case of a 3 set quiver?

My main concern is the Pivot's low-end / "pick 1m smaller" rumor. Not sure how serious I should take it and go for the 6m

I have never ridden a Switchblade but from what I understand concerning power the kites are similar. So if you planned those sizes I would go with the same for the Pivot. For TT high Wind riding I would take the 7.

12/10/8/6 at your weight. I think the pivot is one of the most fun kites you can buy. The switchblade is a lot heavier I would never buy that over a pivot unless you just can't afford it.

Thanks! The Switchblade is actually more expensive.

I'm not looking to buy a 4 set quiver - 3 will do for now. Do you agree that I should go for 12-9-7?

Thanks & best,
Daan

For a 3 kite quiver I'd go 12/9/7 for sure. The 7 might be more powerful than other 7s (Can work in your favour if the win drops during a session), but you'll still hold it down in big winds as it's super stable and predicable. 6-9 is too much of gap for me in the smaller sizes (9-12 is fine).

I'm selling a brand new 7m Pivot (£625), see the "for sale section", I could meet in Camber/Brighton if you're interested .

I have 11, 9 and 7m Pivots and love them all. I was riding the 7m today in Cape Town today and even overpowered it was well-behaved. Use them for foil, surfboard, and TT. I'd like to have a 6m for occasional extreme winds, but that's only a couple days a year for me and a depowered 7m works remarkably well.
