Insurance for inflatable wing?

Postby ronnie » Thu Feb 13, 2020 4:44 pm

I was asking a sports insurance company about insurance for using an inflatable wing, and they said they didn't have a category for it and it would not be covered under any other category.

Anyone aware of insurance cover for an inflatable wing?

call it a wing and they probably think it is a paraglider or something.
It is a sail. A small and not very powerful sail.
If you call an insurer and ask them if they cover something they never heard of, or something they think is actually explicitly not coverable, the answer is usually “no”

They took the time to check exactly what it was and had a discussion between themselves before giving the answer.

A Wing is essentially a two-handed stunt kite without the strings attached. As such, Homeowners Insurance should cover the damage caused by a Wing. It's the same coverage someone would need (use) if they were for instance to nose-dive a stunt kite into a person or car, causing damage or injury.

The problem is that the wing is a new sports item.
Logically, insuring for kitesurfing and windsurfing (which is easy to do and the Company I was getting a quote from also includes a number of other sports grouped together by them, if you insure for kitesurfing and windsurfing}. This Company also had a Kitewing category which is 5 times more expensive than kitesurfing, so I guess that is something like hang-gliding.
Logically (to us) the wing would be somewhere in that group of sports covered if you insured for kitesurfing and windsurfing - but the insurance business does not work like that.

Because the wing is new, there are no statistics for the insurers to work off, so they would have to pay underwriters to do a risk assessment to categorise the wing. There isn't enough business so far to justify them doing that. Its a chicken and egg situation.
I was hoping someone would know a Company who had taken the first step and categorised the wing, and offer cover for it.

Hiscox Ins.
Thanks!

I rang them, but like all the others, they will insure the value of the wing, but would not cover the activity of using the wing.

I decided to take out watersports insurance not including cover for a wing.

Insurance cover for using a wing doesn't seem to exist yet?
