Let's Talk Foil Families

Postby Iridian » Sun Mar 08, 2020 1:33 am

I'm trying to decide what foil family to upgrade into at some point. I've been cataloging the sets based on a several different aspects.

* Price
* Weight
* Modularity
* Options (wave, race, etc)
* Performance

Slingshot:. Heavy weight, very modular, ok performance, good cost, lots of options.

Liquid force: Semi heavy weight, good cost, ok performance, good modularity.

Naish?

Duotone?

Cabrinha?

Moses?

Zeeko?

Would appreciate generic thoughts on the family.

Axis.

Oh, unless you insist on Race. I think that's the only thing they don't really do...

Very modular -- can even use the 3 different masts (15mm, 19mm, carbon) on the same fuselage, and all the wings/stabs in the same series fit the fuselage.

More pricey than others, but you get what you pay for eg, my Dwarfcraft 110cm weighs the same as the old 140 Ride, and the Axis boards are a LOT tougher.

The problem is getting them -- they sell out fast cos they're so popular. I've sold two sets of Axis foils and boards, and a buddy just sold his, and we could have sold them all five times over. Actually put me in a bit of a spot -- in the first week of my trip, I let slip I was selling soon and got swamped with offers so sold my gear, but luckily I've been living on demo gear since. Oh my, the wonderful toys I've had to play with!

get the lightest options you can afford,
that is my main personnel opinion after experiencing most kit types, carbon, full and mixed,I have owned---
aluminum masts with carbon wings
heavy bulky boards to mega fragile featherweight carbon boards,
every time my experience has warmed me to using only lightweight kit that's not too expensive or too fragile, but very modular with the most options for change

If your not in a hurry you could wait for the

Slingshot Phantasm Carbon foil launch - 2020

There is a topic in the hydrofoil section of the forum. If cost is not an issue Ketos.

Though I'm not an owner, if I had to reload from scratch, I agree with Kamikuza, it would probably be with Axis.
They have something to offer for just about any style of foiling with the exception of hard core racing.
They are at the forefront of wing design and seem to be producing very high performance setups that people really like.
The whole setup is very modular and future proof. There's very little chance they're going to need to change the design of the connections etc as other have had to do to accommodate bigger wings.
You can go alu at a reasonable price and upgrade to a carbon mast as budget permits.

Another setup I'd look at is Armstrong, though there is a greater initial outlay as it's premium all carbon design. Also a wide range of wings to cover a lot of desired styles.

Ketos foils are lovely, just drool-worthy, and have great resale value (hardly ever see them second hand), but the price and the box connection put me off (in the past at least).

Moses make very good foils, they have some real winners, but there doesn't seem to be that much coherence between their wing designs. I also think the wing/fuselage connection design is limiting.

My personal ride is Cloud 9, who have been making very solid, much loved foils that cross over very well between kite and surf foiling.
They have fallen behind a bit by being a little slow to market with a high aspect offering, though you can be sure that when they do, it will be worth the wait.
They also come in at a very reasonable entry price, though they don't have mast length variety one might want.

IMHO, you do not many used for sale because they just fly so well that most pilots keep them! :idea:

I have no doubt about that :) I think when people sell them they tend to get sold locally, kept within the family so to say.

Ketos lists price with VAT so the price looks worse than it is.

The one screw KF box connection is really premium as is the shape of their boards.

I think the only downside is max wing is 1200 so less crossover for example to SUP.
