Kite & vacation spot

Postby MrHubbaBubba » Fri Mar 13, 2020 3:15 am

Hi to all,

I'm planning on taking a vacation with family but mostly to kite probably in August. I've never been on the US east coast and wanted to experience it especially because Nova Scotia in Canada is cold as hell even in the summer. I don't care, I'd just jump in a wet suit but my wife does, so I'm aiming a little more south on the US East coast. After some research, Cape Cod seems to be a great white shark magnet zone lol, Cap Haterras has all kinds of reptiles in those semi-marshes. So NJ seems like the safest bet to come out of the water "unchewed"... I googled up spots and all, but I thought what better question to put on a local forum!

There seems to be quite a few kite spots along the coast of Long Beach Townships, so I guess the choice will come down to the price of the hotel. As anyone, I wouldn't want to stay 1 hour from the beach, but I don't want to have to sell my kidney to pay for accommodations either. So, what better way to get the best quality/price spots than ask ppl who know the place!

Would anyone be kind enough to give me some inside tips? Any info is welcome!

Thank you all in advance!

Wind will be light in August all of the North East US including New Jersey. One or two days per week of kiting on average.
I would be afraid to body drag in Cape Cod, kinda like trolling for sharks.

Cape Hatteras has much stronger wind and many more days per week in the summer. Accommodations aren't cheap in the high season but drop a lot after. No alligators or water moccasins in Hatteras, just beach grass and long sandy beaches. Bay bottom is kinda slimy. Not very sharky either. Touristy but fun stuff for kids as well.

I live on the east end of Long Island. August rental prices are similar to a house down payment, not kidding. 😳 September is cheaper and better conditions. Best month here, lots of good kite spots.

How is the wind in Texas in August?
Maybe an alternative and definitely warm water.
I understand your wife 😁

If you are on FB check for Cape Cod info. The ocean beaches there are sketchy with sharks and attacks . That said there are launch areas there on the bays that have stats. on wind when there is not enough elsewhere NJ/NY/CT. Buzzards bay ,Falmouth is one, Chatham also. SPI could be ok in August, but definitely not worth getting on a plane for. go west for wind in August: Maui, Hood River, and SF Bay area, would be my 3 suggestions, in that order.

Save yourself the search and come to Prince Edward Island. August is perfect for all your looking for. Ocean water temps in the low 20's C and the bays are warmer. Malpeque Bay usually kicks up a thermal in the 12-20 knot range 3-4 days a week. The ocean can be hit or miss, but when its on its great. Dollar value on accommodation and entertainment is very good.Great for kids as well.

Hood River is the best bet in August, wind for sure not cold kiting in board shorts.
Great family destination something for everyone, my family loves it there and they don’t kite.
