Are we talking about poor upwind performance compared to an Lei kite with a foil, or poor upwind performance compared to an Lei kite with a TT or SB?
I am talking about peak 4 versus lei wave kite on hydrofoil 1125 cm2, 90 kg rider. at lower end of wind range of kite

on the lei wave kite I could lean the board over and drive upwind

with a peak 4, if I lean, it kills the power of the kite (and I am not oversheeting)
I have similar experiences with 80kg, but i didn’t lean in that much anymore because it doesn’t work, stay more upright, but push the board upwind a bit more.

More updates about Peak4 8m².
I had 2 session, wind was around 12- 16knots, this kite drift amazing, there is no way you could drop it on water if miss the timing doing a jibe.
I tested part of the time with my SS H3 (speed wing) it did ok, good upwind good speed.
About relauch had I fall and my kite crash on water, as the line had tension I could relauch.

For those who have some experience with Lei kite and wanna try some different and good I definitely recommend. I don't know about close cell kite if they are better or not, but thanks God I'm very happy to bought this kite.
PS: I have not been test with wave wing yet, mine are stuck in U.S .

Peaks don't work on TT as they don't go upwind well .

I've used my peak4 5m with a TT board when the wind has come up and been too much for the foil. It works fine if you have enough wind.
I found the upwind ability is similar to an inflatable surf kite and you can jump, just not as high. Just don't oversheet the kite for more power when going upwind, as that will cause poorer upwind performance.

Today’s I was Riding my 4m p4 in low to mid 20’s on a race foil. Failed attempt at a back roll landed my foil in my lines. Kite crashed and no chance at relaunch.

Rolled up my lines in deep water sitting on my board, let the water out of the kite and set up for a hot launch. There was lots of wind chop / bay waves crashing on the kite but was able to unwind the lines with tension and keep the LE out of the water. Kite launched in no time

Who said P4 can’t water relaunch ? 😎

Darippah,

How long does it take to setup the kite and hot launch again. Can you describe how to do it? It´s a very important tool to have.

I would say the process took about 10-15 minutes total.

1) Hold both fly lines at the center of the bar, Wind up both fly lines once around bar before wrapping the front lines ( backstall position) then wind up remaining lines to reach the kite
2) lift the Leading edge of the kite up out of the water to drain the kite and lay the kite on its back with the leading edge catching wind, in the downwind position
3) keep line tension while unwinding the lines , yanking on the bar a little bit to keep the leading edge above water, without launching the kite. This will of course keep the kite dry, and encourage the kite to drift with the wind faster. Speed is key to avoid losing control
4) once unwound, pull on the front lines to lift the kite out of the water, control kite with bar. Let the kite flap to dry it out
5) apologize to anyone downwind for the "shower"

I was at the upper range of the 4m p4 in choppy waters however I think this would work in light winds too as long as there's enough wind to keep the Leading edge above water and there's only light chop

Share your experience if you try this!
