Foil board: Fone Ts51 vs Fone pocket vs LF galaxy

Postby Neurovelo » Tue May 12, 2020 12:08 am

Helo, I am writing from Argentina, so please excuse me about my rusty English writing.
Secondly, I wanted to asked you guys what do you think about these foil boards:

Fone Ts51 (2019)
Fone pocket (2019)
LF galaxy (2019)

I am currently ridding a fone mitu surfboard convertible 5’8 (2019) + ic6 hidrofoil for my foiling days.
I bought these board because I thought It was going to be a good board for doing surf and foil but in reality, the things didn’t work as planned.
The thing here is that I now have a huge board for transporting it in the car and to the beach (uncomfortable, I always go with my twintip also) and i am never use of these board as a surfboard alone (Convertible option obsolete).
My foil board ridding is beginner. Comeing and going and just starting to gybe. When I started foiling I use a Ts51 and was really nice, I have the idea that was easier all the ridding and carveing (heel to toe side). Like it didn’t have such momentum and was easier to carve.
So today in this covid pandemic I was overthinking if it really was convenient for me to change the board to the ones mentioned before. Because of the price of the convertible I could get a fone pocket and galaxy (4,3) new but I don’t know if these boards are a little bit short and would keep my progresión slow.
Unfortunately I live in Argentina and I can’t test these boards before buying.

The other thing I can do is buy a generic small board and try foiling with that one and haveing the convertible for the future but I don’t know if I could trust the hydrofoil screwed to this type of boards.
Thanks again.

PS: I always read the forum but it’s the first time I participate. Thanks again.

I haven’t used any of those boards, but I think if you are beginning to gybe, you are probably ready for a pocket board. You will find surface transitions a bit harder, but it is nice to ride a smaller board, and it is really nice if you can fit your whole assembly in the car without taking it apart. I use a 105 cm home made pocket board.

I wouldn’t advice someone do their first 10 sessions with a pocket board, but after that, I really don’t think you can go wrong with them. I don’t know any intermediate and better foilers not using pocket boards, they are just a lot more convenient.

Thank you very much for the quick response.
If somebody have any idea of those boards I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I had a Galaxy. I liked it a lot. Very nice balance between smaller board feeling and easy touchdowns and waterstarts.

I would consider a mini pocket when you have flying footswitches dialed in.

Does the foil have a KF Box or a plate? If it’s the KF box and you want to keep the one screw assembly I would consider the Ketos boards and similar offerings from Kakoo.

It’s plate! Thanks for the recommendation about the galaxy. I might go in that direction and then go for a mini pocket directly.

So the 4,2 galaxy isn’t small at all?
Thanks.

I think the 4'2 will be perfect for you.

Not small no, in fact quite some size if you are average weight.
But you will like this when learning things, and in light wind, actually for everything imo.

A good allround size indeed :thumb:

I had Mitu 5'8'' convertible, Slice 5'1'' convertible, 51TS and Pocket 130cm 2019.

The Mitu, although heavier in its convertible version, is still an excellent surfboard but as a foilboard the main problem is the domed deck (flat deck is much better for foiling) and it is a little bit too long. If I wanted a convertible board I would go for the Slice 5'1'', much better, but a specialized foilboard will always be better. If you want to learn to jibe fast I recommend the 51Ts or it's replacement the new Pocket 2020 145cm.
If you can already do your jibes, even with a touch down the pocket 130 is an excellent board. Never heard or saw the Galaxy.

i use the galaxy 4'2" and really like it. i've tried smaller boards like Dwarfcraft 3'6". felt way too small for me, though many like it. but i wouldn't go from a 5'8" board to a 3'6" board, and going too small as a beginner could give you some new frustrations. i got the galaxy for $450...can't go wrong with that, and i have no interest now in looking at other boards which kind of says it all.

Thanks all. I will try to sell my mitu convertible and try to buy a smaller board. I really don’t do surf when kiteing. It was a mistake to buy this board. Don’t know if buy directly a new board or try selling this one. Who knows what future departs me.

Thanks for all the answers.

Several guys here use the galaxy board here. Get the 4-3. They are rather wide and floaty. It's a good board. I've ridden one.
I've repaired 2 of them, had dings from guys dropping masts on them. They are pretty tough boards. But they have a weakness. The two skins are thermo formed and glued together with a seam at mid rail. This seam can split, its repairable, but whole core is eps and will suck in water fast, so has to be repaired immediately.
