Brazil.
Spanish is similar to Portuguese, I came the same way like you.

Exchange rate is insane cheap for USD currently, can buy a nice house! Plus this entitles you to a residency!

Cumbuco is best bet, sweet place and big city just 30 min away. Waves around as well.

Cabarete is nice too, but missy won't be that happy there without having a bigger city close by.

Also have a look at Puerto Rico as option.

And Capetown, South Africa.

Let us know what you have decided for at the end and why .
Im with Toby on Brazil! and I believe they are improving the internet on the northern coast.

Internet? It’s not a third world country...since several years I am having a 50mb fibre cable in my house...
And could even get 100mb.
And cheaper than e.g. Germany

Maui is great but the cost of housing is very high. Most condos are over $500k and $500 a month maintenance fees.

so..
about same price for a typical condo in cabarete?
(that you could rent for 5-8x more what you get in DR)
?...
You got me interested so I searched online and prices are much cheaper in Cabarete than Maui. If you search places on Maui they are so much higher and you get so much less space.

Agreed. I've spent over a year on Maui. Love it, absolutely love everything about it....but....for me to trade down (significantly lower my cost of living) Maui won't do. It's right in line with California real estate & cost of living. I need somewhere cheaper. Although I have a feeling we might see a price decline in the condo market due to the Covid. I was there for a few months prior & even in January-Feb they had put the kabosh on China-Japan travelers - who are the highest spending visitors, significant buyers of $$$ real estate.

I spend a bit of time in Indonesia (Mostly Bali), it is so cheap and has some great spots. Once you are out of visa - off to Vietnam. Then back to Indo then pop over to Perth.. Then off to Sri Lanka.

It's a great way not to drain your life savings fast. I used to go to Maui a lot but you can can spend about 5th of the $ elsewhere and I don't find it like it used to be , just so $ orientated - like it has it's own class system these days.
So how long can a foreigner stay in Indo? 3 months? Then how long do you have to be out of the country before you can come back? How about someone in the know put together a list of countries with how long a foreigner can stay, and the minimum investment for permanent residency? Like this:

For U.S. Citizen
Brazil - 3 months in, ? months out. Residency w/ purchase of real estate.
Indo - 3 months in, ? months out.
Thailand - 3 months in ? months out. 10 year visa for 50 years old+
Barbados
Philippines
Oz - 3 months in ?, months out.
Etc.

Any thought about getting a sailboat, go anywhere the wind takes you?

Sounds great but my gut feeling is it might cost too much and the wife wouldn't dig it. She needs a decent sized condo, apt. we're talking 1 bedroom 500-600 sq feet. She's not high maintenance at all but won't live on a boat.

Hej Toby, I was in cumbuco 11 years ago. What changes have happened there?
The main thing that turned me off was all the garbage on the streets. The houses and restaurants were very clean, but outside, not. There were overflowing containers and large piles and dogs scavenging it, spreading it all over the place.
I've been to Parajuru 3 times and found it a small place, nothing really there to do but kite, fish, walk on beach, but much cleaner in the "town".
My wife would never live in those places unfortunately.

Currently you buy a nice ocean view Appartement two bedroom for about 40 k in Brazil...
I am planning to visit Fortaleza / Jeri in November (travel permitting). Any particular areas you would recommend for the apartment? I am interested in getting an apartment.

Cumbuco.

Everything else is further away...Cumbuco has a good distance to Fortaleza (25-40 min drive).
Plus nice restaurants etc.

And several Apartment projects.
