Kite Line lengths?

Postby Whattheflock » Fri Jun 19, 2020 7:41 pm

What line lengths do you use? Thinking of using really short lines 10-15m in a tight launch area.

Short as I like to go is around 17m. Kind of a sweet spot for power/response and still leaves space to loop whenever you want, suits smaller kites/windier conditions on surfboard or foil. 21 is a great middle ground, do it all size with better power production than short lines. Makes the most out of your 9m on any board. 24 is ideal for big airs on your 11m/twin tip. 27m for the desperation sessions on whatever you use for a big kite..... sometimes it’s worth it.

10m is novelty but worthwhile experience to know for sure. Starts to diminish what a kite offers. Give it a go, see what you think.

15? Maybe, would have to be windy.

Hmm, my experiences are, that with tubekites longer lines works much better (well, actually reverse, short lines are not good).

But for foilkites, big foilkites or small wavefoilkites, shorter lines seems to work really well.

If correct, this means you might be able to use much shorter lines if you get a foilkite :naughty:

Have others found the same, that with foilkites shorter lines works much better, than for tubes, or just me?

You are not so precise in in your length recommendations... The OP have cramped spot and need some advice.

Which lengths do you prefer for Lei kites in different situations? I'm interested in getting access to smaller launchsites without sacrifying too much performance.

Also interrested in line lengths on the smaller foilkites and singleskin kites, for example Concept Air and others.

I am no expert in this, as it is only my personal preferences, and I havent exploited the full potential of the smaller wave foilkites yet, thats why I was not precise.

I can tell you what I use and prefer, but I dont think this is gonna answer the question.

For a 12 or 15 m2 UL foilkite I only use 30 m lines, but this is because I only use these in 4-6 knots of wind.

For tubekites in less than 10 knots, I use 30 m lines also.

For an 8 m2 Peak4 just under 10 knots, I use 27 m lines.

For tubekites 3½ to 9 m2 (10 knots of wind and up) I use 26 m lines, have tried shorter but does not work for me.

For single skin foilkites 3,4,5 m2 Peak4s, I use 21 m which works just fine, but havent tried shorter, sorry.

So personally it seems I ride 3 to 5 meter shorter lines on foilkites, than tubes.

And now you might understand why I would not be "precise", as I have an idea it is just me

Although, as I have found this difference, there could also be a difference for others, regarding "how low can you go" in linelengths, foils versus tubes?
Just a lot shorter than mine of course
That was my thought at least, and why I did not put numbers out...

I use 20 m lines on my 10 m and 12 m O.R. flites
Better timing for me and a lot more range on foil, not over powerd early like with 24 meter lines
I bring the 4 m extension set with me but I never use them
I use 24 m lines on my 7 m for better low end

My thinking is if wing foilers can get away without any lines with a 7m-9m wing (giant foil though) in 10-15knots (maybe less) wouldnt a 10m kite with short lines and a smaller foil, perhaps reach a happy medium? I understand by shorting the lines that Ill be sacrificing some performance.. curious on others input though.
