Foil Strap Inserts stripped

Postby darippah » Sun Jul 05, 2020 3:28 am

I stripped some of my strap inserts on my Slingshot Hypermiller from installing/ removing straps very often

I mostly boost while foiling so inserts need to be strong. Also need it to withstand installing/ removing straps often since I use the same board for prone foil surfing.

I tried repairing with fiberglass resin but it doesn't hold for more than a short time.

I'm looking for suggestions on what to fill the holes with that will hold better. I'm not looking to replace the insert system and need to use the holes that are stripped (need the frontmost inserts)

My next shot would be JB weld

Any suggestions ? I'm considering using bigger screws but what I'm using currently is a bit big already

A longer #12 screw might help, or #14 instead

I’ve used jb weld but I think metal inserts if you are removing all the time are the way to go.

I think slingshot needs to up their insert game.

How would I install metal inserts? Helicoil right into the plastic?

I haven’t done it. I was concerned with the diameter of the helicoil.

But foot hooks, and jumping with straps and foils I think puts a lot stress on inserts.

Gonna go with #14 screws. If that doesn’t work I’ll try helicoil

one of my foiling buddies recently used helicoils to secure his straps, he rides hard and fast and boosts big as well, so tests to the limit. jb will not work, resin injection is not great, wooden matchsticks work, but not for long term use.
helicoils work, but you need to get the right tools and bits, go online to watch the you tube videos on how to do helicoil inserts.
they work well.

Good to know ! I’ve never done a helicoil before. Does this kit have everything I need?

You're talking about the type where you screw right into a plastic block right?

Going up one diameter size worked for me in the past as well.

Also, I used longer screws and cut off the pointed part. You don't need the pointed part of the screw for this application, and it gives you more threads to engage.
