Airstyle - foil addition ?

Postby fun2kite » Mon Jul 13, 2020 11:10 am

I was thinking it would be great if someone took on the project to produce a similar base of tricks and explanations on how to do them similar to what Toby is doing for "Airstyle - strictly hooked" .

There are a bunch of various disjointed youtube videos focusing on foil tack , gybe, but there is not any place which would compile all the tricks from basics to very advanced aerial or surface foil tricks into a single GoTo resource for foil straps airstyle or strapless airstyle progression .

Who will do it? The foil adoption is exploding and such resource is now needed.

Any thoughts?

There will never be something similar .

No one is stupid enough to put all their money into it.

This trick database costs so much...plus time to do it.

If you are lucky you will get 100 tricks together. Maybe in Duotone app one day.

From what I am seeing amongst my older kite foiling friends, they gave up and nearly all bought wingsurfing equipment, I am not joking, they seriously did.... not looking like foil freestyle this is going to be a growth area any time soon (never was) despite the lunatics at IKA / World Sailing thinking a world tour of freestyle foiling is in order.

I did a trick database too. It took a shit load of time and money, and I got nothing back but appreciation comments (which are nice!,...), people love free stuff, they just think it is normal these days. for things to be free, but ask em to pay? they run away! lol

Thank you for sharing.. it's hard to believe that avid foilers would just give up foiling in favor of winging, unless they all live in 20 knots wave/swell type of location. but I will take your observation.

I would be just happy with 10-20 tricks as I will never be able to do anything more advanced than backroll / front roll / rodeo / some kite-loop with a back roll etc.. the basic stuff.

But I do really love watching some free style videos that pros put out.. I think people would watch it for sure.

Are we talking jumping with foils? Just few days ago I saw one side of a wing to completely delaminates/split in two pieces. And safety wise it’s comparable to taking a sword to a trampoline.

There just aren't enough people in kiting to make money on the free model.

There are mountain biking channels on youtube with >1 million subscribers. Many videos get 100's of thousands of views within a week.

Nothing in kiting comes close to that. Gunnar's videos are some of the best around. I noticed recently, he's only got 2700 subscribers! Most videos less than 10k views. That blew my mind to see the difference in scale.

Yup, kiting has never been--and will never be--a mainstream sport, no matter what its form. I have "kiting" friends who pick biking over kiting because they can go almost anytime. No waiting, rigging, complaining, and more waiting. No long learning curve, almost anyone can ride a bike. Buy the latest gear and go be trendy! 🤣😂 Those of us who are true kiters pay a price that's not just gear related. Most people aren't willing to pay that price. Are we crazy? Maybe. 😵
