For sure a helmet is much safer. But it's so loud! I wear earplugs but that doesn't help that much. Any ideas?

True. I dislike it too.. but at the moment the best protection for my bold head against the sun..
But when foiling the wind waves here in Corsica it gets silence, love it.
When it gets cold I wear a neoprene hood without holes near the ears, nice silence. (Don’t get one with small holes.. you get crazy from the noise) if you get a thin one you can wear you helm over it.

Some are better than others. I'm using a Gath that looks a bit goofy but is quiet in the wind department and has minimal bucket effect.

get some different earplugs. You shouldn't hear much with doc's pro plugs

I've noticed more people wearing rugby scrum helmets. Looks a little goofy, but probably solves the problem with the ear covering.

Wear better ear plugs? I got Surf Ears 3 this year and they’re great. Supposedly don’t cut noise but they do. Thankfully it’s wind noise...

I use a waterproof MP3 player, depends on your style but I enjoy switching off and listening to music doing some long runs

This. Such a pain in the ear. I'm not being sarcastic.
I've used gath, prolimit, off brand, now Forward wip. They are ALL super noisy!!
But I use them to protect my eardrums from impact.
