I've broken my eardrums somewhere between 5 and 10 times in my life. Each time it's a prayer that they come back so I can hear again. All it takes is for me to crash in the water and they break now so they are really fragile from all the scar tissue. Around 5 years ago I started wearing earplugs to protect them. Haven't broken them since no matter how I crash. Doesn't seem to matter what kind. I like doc's the best because they are cheap and fit me decently. If the only reason you wear a helmet is to prevent ear drum damage I'm almost certain that earplugs are all you need.

scrum
The one I had was very noisy. Little ear holes left a big whstle.
scrum hats work better than my two other hard shell helmets, have used a stylish mountain bike helmet, that works well, but still a little noisy.
My snow board style helmet is very noisy but gives ultimate protection, looks great as well, and lasts, had that for near 20 years now, all the lining and fixings are just like new, and I sail in sea water, it was costly though, but was purchased up on the slopes in italy.
and yes that helmet is noisy when skiing as well.
but looks great at least not like some i have seen.

Decathlon make a specific scrum style hat that might work?

That's not that bad looking. Too bad they didn't put padding lower down on back of head, where you get bonked by the board.

I'm using a Foward Wip. The least expensive one. Best so far of helmets used kiting 19 years. Its noisy. All the helmets have been that have ear protection, which I need. I'm going to put some neoprene patches on the inside of the ear flaps, see if that helps.
Scrum caps look too weird. And generally I don't give a shit what people think, so that's saying a lot. Still I might try one if someone can attest to them being quiet

If you read the reviews, they mention that they are doing a bit of a redesign of it this year. Worth keeping an eye out to see what gets added to the range to replace this one.

I'm guessing this is why they are on special discount?

I wonder if the “dead cat” hair like material that is used for stopping wind noise on microphones might help ?

My helmet is a whitewater helmet which also cover the ear with the hard shell. Actually not that noisy at all which I realize during the jumps were you only hear the singing of your lines ;-)

noise is one issue, weight is another (foiling = whiplash falls). What's the lightest hard shell helmet out there (not counting custom made ones).
