Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on what size kite you guys would recommend as my first kite? Think Switchblade or EVO
I'm 195cm (6,3) and 100kg (220)

The wind is about 7-22 kts here.

I'm looking for a fun ride.

The attached chart may be useful. It would not be out of place for a big guy to learn with a 17m imho but a two kite quiver would give you more TOW which is, arguably, the most important thing.

A 17 paired with a 12 would cover all the beginner friendly range. If you start with a 14 you will have more overlap if you add a bigger kite. So go 17 if you want to cater for the lower end of your wind range and expand from there. Talking TT!

I was your weight for a while. You need powerful freerides kites. If you are just starting out you probably don't want to learn to foil just yet so I would go 17m, 12m and 9m. You can skip the 9m if it never goes above 22 knots you can use the 12m in 22 knots at your weight. If you want to go for Cabrinha a 17m Contra and 12m and 9m Switchblade would work great. With some skills and a huge board the 17m should work from 8 knots to 15 comfortably and the the 12m from 15 to 22! The 9m would work from 20 to 30. For Duotone I would go more for the Juice / Rebel combo.

I really liked my 17 Gaastra spark (never tried anything else) up to 12/13 knots with a big freerideboard (155x45)..... yes only going forth and back!

With wind nothing to 22 knots... I would get some 17/12 combo.

I think your wind might be a bit higher than you say?
At you weight I'd go for 9m SB 12m SB and 15m Contra
2 boards, say 136 and a 148+
That'll give you a lot of range
(Based on me being 117Kg)

I am 195lbs and regulary ride a 12M Naish Pivot in 16-26 knots on a 138x41 TT board. If you're looking at the kites you mentioned (Swtichblade/Evo) or others like it, Pivot, North Reach, etc. I would be buying the 14M given the top of your wind range is 22knots. I'd say that only above 22knots I'd be looking to move down to an 11M in those kites.

At 100kg, ignore winds below 15kn on a TT, especially as a learner. Take it from me, it's just frustrating for us larger humans. As badgb21 said, go for a 15m (I ride a 15m Rebel in those conditions). If you get a lot more in the lower end of your specified wind range, go with a slightly bigger board in the 145-148/45 range. That will get you down to mowing the lawn in 13kn or so. It's not particularly fun, but it'll work.

Also, if the wind does pick up and you enjoy riding quite powered up, you should probably consider a 5-strut over a 3-strut.

Get an Ozone Zephyr 17m. You will use it for half of all your kiting. Its a big powerful kite that has huge range and turns fast if you crank on it. I haven't found a better kite for big guys. I have owned three of them and It was a must have for teaching big guys to kite. The Cabrinha Contra 15,17m has grunt for big guys as well, but smaller range, turns much slower, and more bar pressure. Thank me in a year.

Go for a biiig board:
I go for monster door (165x50) in LWind if Twintipping.
Brings you down to 12kn. You need surface area.
Kite is good from 15m, I would say. 17m, an agil kite like Zephyr will do, or think about 60cm bar.

I have monster door 12-20kn, and an anton mtrain 149x46 18-30kn as 'the small' . Others are dusting in the cellar.
I go with fun with them.

That sayed, while starting, used equipment will do, 2-3yrs but in good shape cause you will stress the kite.
2nd or 3rd can be new, gives best usage/cost relation, I would say. Engauge a collegue to check yr buy of used equipment, some 'criminals' out their who refinance their next equipment by garbage sells.
A vendor or surfshop may be a good source for a deal.
Talking to them, is better than INet research.
