Pocket board building

I built one 106x43 board as Merl did but the foam was 55 kg/m'3. Holds my 90 kg nice. Weighs 1750g with Eva pad. Maybe 80 kg foam is overkill?

Whats your laminate schedule?

One layer of 240 g cf. A strip of 20 cm wide 230g ud cf 50cm length both sides. A couple of patches 240g cf over the foil mount for compression strength. Foam is 2 cm airex c70.55.
Lamination done in two stages - top (all layers) , then bottom(all layers).

But I like sandwich construction more. 200 gcf-3mm airex C. 70.75-200g cf-xps-200 g cf-airex-200g cf. It comes a little bit heavier but more rigid. And it is easier to set rocker.

160 g spread tow cf is sheduled for next sandwich board.

This 1800 g board snapped only when me (90kg) and my friend (88kg) have stood on both sides of board and started to bounce a little. I think this strength is quite enough. The board was repaired after this so called 'load-factor method' testing.

P. S. This board was made from 2 cm 55 kg foam with one layer of 240 g cf, a couple of patches, and ud strips.

Im just saying that there ARE options, and way better for the environment. Not for you, u using foam and thats fine. Not true about Paulownia Tom, u well know the Malme shop who sells it there:

Sadly for us they moved to Croatia (near Slovenia border) in 2019. But this could be good news for some (although I didn't find them so cheap...)

Good point about the environmental issues. I think one reason HD foam became expensive is because they used to make it with
gasses like freon which is probably much more restrictive now.

I am thinking: what if the pocket board would be thick and narrow (like 109cm long, 10cm thick, 31cm wide); I am planning to use with a big wing (1100cm2). What would be the drawbacks of making it narrow? Harder to switch feet?

Definitely risk you will step off the edge of the board during transitions.
