1600cm2 high aspect wing and 78kg, should have I gone bigger?

So, I have ordered Gong Veloce XL foil setup, which is 1600cm2, and it's a modest high aspect wing. I weigh 78kg and my biggest wing is 5m. And this would be my "light-medium" wind wave and freeride setup for winging.

However, I have not received any of the stuff as of yet, due to delays, and hence could change my order. After reading some comments about the Veloce XL wing (but I guess this is common feature of all higher aspect foils) is that they seem to need quite a lot of wind to perform and they have quite abrupt stall behavior. At the same time they are being said to have long glide ability which should help to keep the speed going, but still doesn't help when trying to get on foil?

And about the sizing, for example Fanatic and Naish have their high aspect line from three front wings, the middle being 1400-1500cm2 in size so this Veloce XL 1600cm is not small compared to them.

With 88L (+10L) board (very wide, 70cm), at what wind speeds a skilled wingfoiler could start with this kind of setup please?

I am pretty much right in your category with about the same situation. I’m 76 kg and just upgraded from a Gong pro XL to the Veloce XL. My board is a FoilSurfMachine 5’1”,90 L wing board. Was worried about higher stall speed and about how well the Veloce XL would carve. My biggest hand wing is the Echo 6m. Also have 5m, 4m, 3.3m Echo’s.

The Veloce XL does take a wee bit more speed to get up on foil compared to the larger pro XL but really just by a small amount. Once on foil it really shines; high top end, low stall speed (almost as good as the Pro XL), very “carvy”, great glide and pump ability. Normally it takes me some time to adapt to a new foil (I’m a klutzy ole guy somewhere in the intermediate skill level range), but I really adjusted to it pretty quickly. In addition to the Pro XL, I also ride a Moses 1100. The Moses pumps onto the foil at lower speed and stays on foil at really low speed, BUT it’s just not as “carvy” as the Veloce XL, as you’d expect with its massive 110 cm wing span versus 94cm for the Veloce XL. I just like riding the Veloce more and those big Echo’s have great power for getting me up on foil.

This is a video clip from my first 60 minutes on the Veloce XL in some pretty light flukey winds with the 5m Echo. Not exactly sure what the specific wind speed was. Tacks went surprising well, and I was even making my 360’s, though not quite finishing them on the foil. No complaints, given the light winds and newness of the foil. Didn’t have time to rig the 6m and winds were dropping out anyway. I’ve since ridden it well powered with my 4m and had a great time. Hope this helps

That would be correct. Had a local machine shop do it. The Gong Al masts are just too spongy for the larger front wings, and I opted for this solution over the Gong mono bloc carbon masts since it was a bit cheaper and offered me more mast length options ( 65, 75, 90 cm) for the shallow water I mostly ride in.
