Split-Foil-Skate

Postby BalsaMichel » Thu Jul 30, 2020 2:58 pm

This is my new split-foil-skate.

fact sheet:

Lenght 1.32m
Width 0.47m
Splitted lenght x width: 0.73m x 0.47m
total volume 7.5 liter
Core material: B-Comp B-Core QX Balsa (density approx. 195g/liter)
Core thickness 15mm --> 8mm at tip
Rocker: 1 cm starting in front of the foil-mount, total 85mm at the tip (zero-point at foil-mount)
Layup: 80g/sqm Textreme -- 300g/sqm triax carbon -- core -- 450g/sqm triax carbon
upside-down lamination so that the "more ugly" side is on the bottom
All edges ABS 3D printed, connection profile also ABS 3d printed

+++ split-systems seems to be rigid enough (we will see!!)
+++ stiffness is okay for a 15mm plate

--- a bit heavy (3.2kg)
--- foil-mount maybe a bit to far at the tail
--- HEAVY!
--- I hate the colour of the deck pad, it´s a bit too thick anyway
--- this is HEAVY for a small skate !!!

reminder for myself: Check if it´s a final sinker with the cabrinha foil before you throw it into deep water :D

Did I mention already this is a bit heavy? I´m gonna built a new one, a bit smaller with some improvements at 2.5 - 2.7kg.

Split-system was described here:

Holy smokes that's tight. Do you work with composites as a professional? This is not a garage build (like my stuff :)

I´m just kind of a 3D-CAD junkie. I have some experience with thermoplastic composites but not so much. Rest is trial and error.

My wintergarden-board-factory is definitively much smaller than a garage with a yield of 2 boards a year. :D

Very cool build!

For what it's worth, I like that loud green on the black/grey - It's classic sporty, like a Porsche GT3RS.

Amazing.

Commercial look for sure. That’s a compliment though it doesn’t sound like much like one!

Hope it rides great.

Hey thank you :D

Tried it yesterday behind a boat. The board works, but there should be more stiffness for riders above 75kg, especially in the split area. I´m thinking of a 20mm core but it has to be lighter than this one then. If I built this again I would increase 0° fibre from 150 g/m² to somewhere over 200 g/m² and reduce +/-45° a bit.

thats a beautiful build. Pro level skills!
If you increase thickness you'll get much more stiffness. Your core is heavy, so I'd look to use 80kg corecell as core. I'd use the beautiful 80g textreme and 200g twill cf and 2 layers of 100g uni d cf each side, full width to avoid kinking that textreme. You dont need all that triax.

I'm building another split board, but its way ghetto compared to your build! I'll post picks when its done.
