Yes I'm an idiot !

Postby pj sofine » Mon Aug 24, 2020 3:09 pm

Put my new to me spaceskate front foil together and headed out on a new to me 4'6" ss dwarftcraft. Could not get up on a foil,I drifted down wind and did the unheard of walk of shame upwind !Usually its the opposite when new ! Gave it another try, moved the mast a bit forward and still nothing ! Gave the rig to a friend of mine and he had the same issue. After a surfboard session I'm sitting in my beach chair drinking beer and the peanut gallery gathers round and our collective intellect comes to the conclusion that the fuselage is inserted in the front foil upside down, the stabilizer is mounted on the bottom instead of top so winglets are pointing down ! Took one run,all was better, went back to chair and more beer. :duh:  :smash: :anon: :brainshit: :help: :lame1: :wallbash: :mad2:

Don't worry we've seen several people make the same mistake. I also saw a video by one of the big foil shops in the US discussing the SS foil and they also had it rigged upside down during their video (in the shop not on the water)...

I confess. I had the same experience today. I had disassembled, cleaned and lubed my SS foil a few weeks ago. Today was the first time I've been foiling since then. I couldn't figure out why the foil kept diving instead of lifting. Total idiot, yes I am. :( :( :(

Funny to realize how many of us have made this error. What's a little scary to think, is the noobs that did this, failed miserably, and just gave up, figuring foiling isn't for them. It really is easy to do and not at all obvious that it's wrong....bit of a design fail, in terms of intuitive easy assembly.

I dont know the specific foil, but was it to be understood as the front wing was mounted correctly, but the stab upside down because the fuselage was?

If so, it might give a very odd trim, and be nervous like if stabless (a rodeo horse maybe), but you should be able to ride upwind, standing a lot further rear than usually, especially if you ride strapless :naughty:

Very difficult to ride, but if one can manage, upwind will work even if stab is upside down.

You could go even higher upwind and in less wind, IF you can ride steady, as the stab lifts now.
But in reality this is not possible, so everything feels wrong, yes

If both wings upside down, it would not really work, no.

The other day I saw a noob guy walking back upwind after trying to learn with the foil turned the opposite way stab foward and just realized after getting back to the launching spot.

Other thing that you only do it once is to miss a screw or a specific wrench to assemble your foil.

Get ready, in 2021 every brand will make kook-proof strut/fuselage connectors and announce proudly that this design revolution is *wait for it* ...a TOTAL GAME CHANGER!
