Just ordered 1 workbee 1.5x1.5m. I have some 3d printing experience but first time a cnc so some learning coming
What software cad/cam are you using? There seems to be a crazy amount of options. I have fusion360 but am a real noob on it but it seems to do anything including generating gcode.
To set things up I will work with the beginner programs like easel to get it dialed in.
Cheers and happy building.

I think factories are using it
For me, the cnc is the opposite of diy. Good luck.

Have a look at EstlCam. It´s easy to use and quite cheap. There is a lot of online support on forums/facebook groups for it.
You can use Fusion360 for 2D or 3D design and export afterwards to Estlcam with .dxf (2D milling) or .stl (3D milling). Then you do the rest with Estlcam. It includes 2 modules, the one where you are creating your milling paths out of yor 2D / 3D data and a CNC-controller that works with an Arduino and also some other control-systems.
Fusion has some really cool tools on board for creating milling paths as well and somewhere there´s a free postprocessor plugin for exporting to Estlcam. But normally I´m using Estlcam for this as it´s much more intuitive and faster if you´re not working every day with it.
My CNC is homemade and Estlcam runs on a Surface Go tablet as I like minimalistic solutions

Unfortunately the website seems to be only in german but you can switch the program easily to english. If you download Estlcam you can try it for free without limitations but it will start to show some nerve-racking time delay requesters.
There are also some free CNC-controllers like GRBL which also works with an Arduino.

Thanks Mica!
I built myself a custom CNC last year, set it up with an arduino, grbl and ran some test Gcodes on it but couldn't find a CAM package I liked for it.
Downloaded EstlCam last night after reading your post and I'm actually really impressed with it. It has a GRBL machine type already and the settings for the machine are the best I've seen. I've written both embedded and front end software, applications myself in the past and the author has done a truly brilliant job writing this software to be intuitive and capable. I'll be clearing off my CNC table and giving it a shot in due course

For me CNC and 3D printing are gateways from my creativity to my creations. I wasn't initially confident with CAD but after about 8 years as one of my hobbies it really is my favorite way to make anything fancy with precision. Digital tools like GIMP, Inkscape, FREECAD, (OPENSCAD for the programmers among us) open up amazing possibilities. You can look back at creative artists like Leonado Da Vinci and see genius at work in his time period, but you can bet that if he'd been born in our life times his creativity would have been even more amazingly represented. Take pride in your hand skills but don't deny yourself better tools if you have the capacity to use them.

Fusion is good and download it for free as an enthusiast. It also a solid cam package. Spend you time learning fusion.
I'm rolling with fusion at home for my home builds and at work im using solidworks. Solidworks is way faster to model with. But costs an arm and a leg. Fusion is pretty darn powerful for a free software.

That´s true, the CAM module in Fusion is absolutely great. I´m using it for example for creating 3D Cutout-paths. But I´m using Estlcam for the "easier" tasks from 2D /2,5D milling to 3D surface milling, or just to cut something into two pieces as it takes less time (for me) than Fusion.
But maybe it´s just because I´m using Solidworks for job as well (and at home) and don´t want to make the detour to Fusion every time. Anyway, after some time you are getting fast with any tool you are using.
By the way: If you can take Solidworks home from work: It has a free CAM module as well since 2018 or so. Haven´t tried it yet. I wouldn´t expect it to be as powerful as the one in Fusion but we will see.

Haha, okay. Fits to the "free" simulation tools then. Wouldn´t say those are great
