Europe from mid-September to mid-October (warm place)

Postby chickenl00p » Wed Sep 02, 2020 8:22 pm

Hi everyone,

it would be great if you could advice me where me and my wife can go kiting from mid-September to mid-October in Europe. I'm aware there's no high season in any warm place here at that time but still would like to give it a try and choose a place with the highest chance of having good wind. There are a few considerations to take into account:

- I am an independent rider (still beginner, though) and my wife wants to do a course,
- due to the covid situation, we decided not to go outside Europe and avoid Spain,
- it must be a warm place (my wife's condition :-?), so northern Europe is not an option,
- I have 12m kite and plan to buy 9m.

Based on my research so far, Greece (Paros) and Italy (Sicily) seem to be our best shots. Thoughts?

I would appreciate any suggestions, insights or personal experience from travelling in this period. We would really like to get the most out of this trip and looking forward to your help! Thanks in advance!

It looks like you've already done your homework, those 2 are the spots to go!

thanks Leon;) Another one to consider is Sardinia. Should we just choose one out of these and hope for the best or is there one in particular that someone can recommend?

Sardinia is beautiful !
And many spots to discover!
You need a car, since winds can be often, but change directions, then it's good to be mobile.
Beautiful waters, great food, friendly people.

Check the spots section of kite forum, I covered almost all spots on the island personally.

Winds should be great in that time, and no beach restrictions due to off season

I enjoyed Sardinia. Punta Trettu is very beginner friendly (as an example). Loved the little village I stayed in. That said Sicily looks even nicer to me - so I'll probably go there next.

Can't comment on Greece.

I would recommend Sicilia. I was there several days on October two years ago and it was pretty windy and very warm (in comparison with Brittany). Food is amazing and pretty cheap.

How windy did it get?
Never see videos or pictures of really good wind (20+). So would be good to learn more about from people who have been.

You never know what you get with outdoor sports. Toby's observation about Sicily is right. I've been to Stagnone on the west side and it is not known as a very windy place but in September decent for 12 and bigger. The lagoon at the spot is really good though. Square kilometers of flat knee deep water with no current or tide. Fabulous. Stay at Alby Rondinas place or at Santa Maria. Greece is windier however. And friends have been very happy about Sardinia. And the stretch between Montpellier in France down to Spain with places like Leucate, are known as windy places. Flat water inside the "etanges".
