Moses foils

Postby TheJoe » Sun Sep 06, 2020 11:25 pm

So I'm looking at starting to wing and not sure on which wing I should go with the 873 or 1100. I all ready have a Moses set up so want to save money and stick with them. My plan is to wing out and catch tanker waves to surf and then back to shore. The waves are pretty mellow but would like to carve a little bit. Later on I might want to try smaller wings but for now I'm looking at 10-15kts with a 6m wing. I'm not trying to replace kiting just adding to my lightwind fun.

Here is a vid of some tanker wave foiling.

Definitely the 1100. The 873 is ok, but the 1100 is a lot better for winging as the higher aspect ration combined with the thinner profile give you really early flying and very smooth glide and pump.

I am 75kg and have the 873, 1100 and now W1000.
The 1100 was my favourite and now it has a serious competitor the W1000.
I am only on my second session on the W1000 with 420 stab and it seems to pump up on the foil very very close to the 1100.
Up on the foil the W1000 seems to have more lift than the 1100, next session I'll move the mast a bit further back.
873 would be my last choice however I have had some good sessions on it.

Yeah I have seen them a few times just out foiling. I'm all ways looking for them as I don't think it would end well hitting one with a foil at 20+ mph.

Thanks for the advice guys looks like I'll start out with the 1100.

I do have a Moses "Kit 91 - 633 Carbon Kite Wave" (91 cm carbon kite mast with W633 Onda frontwing) for kitefoiling. Now I would like to start wingfoiling and thought about buying a 873 frontwing. I think it will fit to the F710 fuselage and the S483 stabilizer. But I am afraid that the 91 cm kite carbon mast is not stiff enough for this large frontwing. Although I would start with a 41 cm training-mast, which I still have, I think I will end up on the 91 cm mast, which I really like for kitefoiling. Did anybody try this combi? Or is there a danger of breaking the mast as it is not stiff enough? Thanks for answering!

I use a 873 for winging also with a kite mast I think, but mine is 71cm.

I don' think there is any durability problem with a too flexy mast, but from pros I heard that has more instability.

The force you get from the wing is far weaker than the power you get from the kite, so I think you also apply less force on the mast while winging.

I think the biggest problem comes from the fact that you need a bigger board for winging, a least for first started potatoes like me, and the extra load that coul cause instability comes from the wheight of the bigger board, that sometimes is hard to control with a flexy mast.

@BOEMIX: Thanks for the fast answer! That´s correct with the board. For kitefoiling I am using a pocketboard and for winging I thought about buying a 130 liter wing- / sup-board for the beginning.
