Foam grab rails for board offs

Postby dracop » Fri Sep 11, 2020 9:48 am

Anyone have suggestions for foam grab rails to put on the side and tips of a TT for boardoffs?

Google search came up light on results altho maybe Im not typing in the ideal search query.

I did find Crab Grab Rails at evo.com.

There is a European shop with a nice product (they call it a fly surfer product but its not on fs website) but the shipping to US is ridiculous.

Yoga blocks are a reasonably cheap way of buying high density eva foam if you are prepared to cut and shape your own.

I'm using deck pad (same stuff you use on a surfboard) seems to work. Cut a strip and tape it. I think it's the same stuff posted above by thejoe

Look for old foot pads and cut a piece of.

Maybe ask your local shop if they have old ones...or a board repair shop.

I've used rubber tie-down straps (cut off ends, size and glue). They are higher profile than surf pads (easier to grab, but more likely to pop off during slides and some other tricks).

All of the above are solid recommendations but like Toby, I prefer to cut an old flip flop...the kind you can get at a dollar store. They are really soft and provide great gip. Be sure to use the right adhesive. I've used several over the years that did not last but gorilla glue seemed to do the trick.

Anyone tried Sugru? (Its kind of Plasticine that sets into a hard epoxy)

You could tailor the height or width of it really effectively with that stuff. I have used it to repair the worn liners in my wake boats and it has seemed to last fairly well there. Its not super flexible though when set. Is that a benefit or problem in this case?

The foam should not be too soft.

The ones from Flysurfer are too soft...it kept slipping of my fingers.

So I added thin surfpad on top and on the side, and now it's perfect.
