Try not to look like a seal.
Also, if you get attacked, the shark was just investigating and really does not want to eat you for dinner...
...This knowledge should make you feel a bit better while you bleed out.

I know of about 4 cases of kiters - new cal, florida and western australia.
3 of them were body dragging.
GWs have been protected for many year now after being fished and controlled for many years previous, numbers are way up.

I saw a White shark last year in Bridgehampton NY. It was a late afternoon In September. I was near the end of an offshore tack trying to get back upwind when i saw a dorsal fin. As i approached the fin at first i thought it was a porpoise. As i got closer and the fin breached more it was clearly a large shark fin. The waves were big so It kept going in and out of view behind the swell. I kept heading toward it trying to get a look, not really thinking about it until i got within 50 feet. Then the tail fin appeared from behind a swell, a good distance behind the dorsal. It was then I realized the shark was huge. Thankfully it was swimming east, perpendicular to my direction. Still fixated on the shark, i finally thought it was time to turn around or jump it like a ramp, and by then i was really close. All i was thinking was don't mess up the jibe and fall in.
Obviously, i made the jibe and headed in without falling in the water. The shark was probably gorging on the huge schools bunker that were everywhere that day. Later i went home and looked up pictures of shark fins and confirmed it was a white shark. I would not want to be body dragging with that thing in the water. We see fins occasionally up here but that one was a monster.
Don't fall in is my advise.

I live in Western Australia and in my town we have 1700 registered kiters ( few years back tho). Add heaps more unreg. occasional ones.
Do not recall any kiter fatality or even an incident. Surfers, yes. Many fatalities. Kiters zero.
Per capita, we are probably very high by GW fatalities.
