10m or 9m 2020 Dice

Postby DonaldM » Mon Oct 12, 2020 10:10 am

Hey there,

looking for another piece of advice as I hear mixed opinions (i know this will be opening a can of worms, but heck, knowledge is power). I searched the forum, but couldn't find the answer.

I'm looking at adding Dices to my quiver for boosting / kiteloops. I currently ride neo's (6/9/12) and recently tried my friends 10m 2019 dice. And oh my, what difference, that yank is pure pleasure 8) . I've tested similar kites like the GTS and 2021 bandit also. But prefer the feel of the Dice as being the right mix in speed, bar-feel and explosiveness for me. (although i would have considered the core GTS if wouldnt already have north/duotone kites and their safety/pump system would be normal)

Now the question arises... do i go for 7/10 or 7/9 quiver.. (i'm aiming for a 2 kite 2020 quiver as i also have my neo's, a waveboard, and a foilboard haha). I know Dices have a lot less low-end than my Neo's and love to be flown overpowered. However, I'm not sure about the 9m vs 10m difference. I heard it say kites are designed from 9m up and down..

I usually ride TT between 18-40 knots, 78kg, north-sea (up to 1-2m waves with strong currents) & flat water

Thanks!

Hey,

As a 2020 Dice owner I don't think you can go wrong with either... Im frequently amazed how well my 11m loops, and the 9m is just absolute sex on strings. As you say, the Dice is at its best when riding with power and actively flying the kite. So if a smaller size gives you more confidence to throw it around then maybe that's the go... If you want to ride the Dice more than your Neos them maybe the bigger size will get you switching over sooner...

The 9 being my favourite kite, I switch down to it at about 22kts and only get the 7 out if its 33+... (68kgs on a 135 TT)

Should say that I also ride my dice with a surfboard and am very happy with how well it behaves in waves, even in onshore conditions, its just not the easiest kite to re-launch if wind is a bit light. So dont crash it!

Tough one, I only had 2019 models and really liked the 9m but needed 25 knots to have fun, then when it was 30 knots and gusty I had a rough time again but my skills are not that great either haha. Often thought I should've went with 10 and 8 and then had this perfect day with 26-28 knots and a real blast on the 9m followed by another day where it was 18-22 knots and had some solid fun with the 9m rebel and not even a little fun with the 9m dice on my surfboard. I am around your weight too with 78-81 kg.

You could also just get a 9m and enjoy those glorious days and see if you need something else. That size is also really easy to sell, my 9m dice was gone 3 days after posting it on ebay earlier this year.

You can't go wrong, both choices are ok, but I would say go for 7-10. Just a little less overlap so a bit more range.
From a resell perspective the 9 and 10 are both equally easy to sell.

Side note 1: Get rid of that Neo 12, way too big for this type of kite ;)
Side note 2: For light wind foiling, you can do that with a Dice 10, but do not drop it as it is too heavy. Same goes for the Neo 9 or 12, unless it is the 2021 SLS version perhaps. Complete your set with a lw singlestrut kite for those conditions (like the Mono 11)

Thanks guys! insightful. Might try the 9 to get a comparison.

Sidenote1: hahaa yeah, not my best purchase ever. It's on it's last legs held together with spinaker tape so i'm flying it till it rips beyond repair. Only sporadically use it for TT since I got my foil.
Sidenote2: For foiling/waveriding i'm gonna see how things go with the dice and possibly sell off my neo's if the dices perform well enough. I foil from 12 knots with my 9 neo which is (just) fine for relaunch. I think after i buy this dice set i should watch my kiterelated spendings a little hahaha. but thanks for the tip :)
