Ocean rodeo Flite 14.5m 2017 vs 2020? Low end not the same?

Postby waketo » Sat Oct 17, 2020 1:14 pm

Hi, I Just received my 2020 flite 14.5m two months ago. Not the aluula version
My previous kite was the 2017. I use this kite for light wind days. I think the new version is more a freeride kite than a light wind kite. With less low end.
Anyone with same kite?
With 90kg I used the 2017 between 10kt and 18kt with twin tip
The 2020 I need 12kt but can go to 20/21kt

I have this one in stylish HALLOWEEN colors - think it's a GEN 6 so 2018/2019 hard to pin down the year of a OR kite - it seems to work really well by that I mean it turns fast and gets my BIG A$$ out in <20mph I typically ride it on TT with a bigger than normal board in winds like 14/15 to 20-22mph so averaging just under 20 is best - once the gusts get to 25 its a bit more exciting than I prefer but for reference I'm 275lbs so do the math.

That said, I can't say I've pushed the lowest of the low end - haven't used the line extensions either...but getting new 25.5m lines for long term use which is a happy medium between my normal 24m and the 27m so hoping that is a good fit as I prefer to ride a bit more powered and slash and jump around a bit.

I am curious what others can infer about model years and performance... I have been pleasantly surprised with how fun this kite is to fly and have had some memorable days with nobody else out just soaking up the sunset stoke - most of you regular sized peeps would only need a 12m - but if you have never flown a OR Flite - you should only do so if you are prepared to BUY ONE - this kite is DOPE!

Hard to imagine how the Aluula version of either the 14.5 or 12 Flite would compare - i'm thinking that would be a compelling test drive...

You should be comparing unused 2017 and 2020 against each other to say something accurate about possible design change between these models. Your perception can be just stretching of fabrics and bridle shrinking on much more used kite causing more camber and higher airfoil angle of attack. I take you use the same bar for both so bar lines shrinkage does not create the difference.

I dont know about this two kites, but one time in the past just installing a new line set on the bar made me feel like the low end was lost. And than i realized the back lines on the old set were 10 cm shorter than the fronts... after adjusting the new set the low end was magically back.
I am not saying this is the case here, just a thought...

I'm using the same bar and línes. Can't Tell about the low end but for sure I can fly the new one in 2/3kt more.
About kite stretch amd bridles, don't know how noticible can be.
