Its a modified collapsible walking stick, about 80cm long.
Bury half in the sand at an angle into the wind, 40cm is enough to catch the kite.

PVC Hook is looking better. I like the idea of a bungee anchor line. I would also bury the anchor just so you don't catch the bridles/lines before the PVC hook

Thanks for posting!
Yes. The sand bag is buried. That is the kite bag with packing straps inside, that I hook onto the anchor just so it won't blow away down the beach while I'm surfing.
Made up my own, copied your idea. Worked great on our narrow beach, means I can use longer lines again👍 Thanks

I finally got a chance to test the self landing method that I had in mind for a while. The gear requirements are minimal. You need an anchor (in my case a bag filled with sand), a piece of rope or leash (not too short), and a carabiner. Steps:
1. Go to the anchor and clip the carabiner on a steering line.
2. Keep the kite low and walk back - until the carabiner reaches the bridle. Fly the kite so the steering line remains fairly straight.
3. Land by pulling the steering line, while letting the other lines go slack. The kite will land and stay flat on the ground without any drama. This works very well because there is simply no room for the kite to misbehave: the kite is 2-3m away from the anchor, as opposed to 20m+ away when you QR.

Unlike the hook method, there is no need for precision, the kite cannot get away, and there is little if any stress on the cloth and lines. The carabiner is guaranteed to grab the entire back line bridle, and not perhaps just 1-2 lines as a hook might do.

I landed like this 4 times today without any issues. 26m lines, 6.5m kite, wind about 15 mph. From what I’ve observed so far, this works so well that it may become my primary landing method.

^^^ This I like the sound of. I'd be interested to hear more specifics about it. Length of leash etc.

For a high AR kite to get the other lines slack enough, quickly enough, you might need to be able to flag from an OS handle on the captured rear line, rather than going up the captured rear and across the window to create the slack. Is that a fair observation? Or will it lay down as you walk accross?

PS very interesting idea, and looks worth developing, nice one!! I will give it a try at some point.

br44 interesting concept but for most of my self-landing spots I have trees nearby and limited beach space so I cannot walk on shore with the kite. The kite is landed while I am still in the water. I tried my land Kite Catcher this week and it worked flawlessly ( 8 m FireFly V2 14 kts)

I'm not sure why there would be any difference between this idea and a pvc anchor? Both require you to fly the kite low at the 9 or 3 o'clock position on the edge of the wind window. I'm going to try his idea today. Clip an old board leash to your line while flying the kite at 11, then gradually walk backward while bringing the kite down to 9 oclock. Then land it. Seems pretty genius.
