Kiteboarder accident in Toronto?

Postby Hugh2 » Mon Nov 16, 2020 8:08 pm

From a post today on Sailing Anarchy. Hope he recovers. I was too windy and cold here for anyone to go kiting.

Toronto got a good blast about 3:20 pm yesterday.

We had just wrapped up some frostbite sailing on the island and had headed back to the City in the RIB. We had the RIB in the air on the crane when the first wave of pressure hit, we hustled and got her onto the trailer then took shelter behind and in the truck as the real pressure hit. We were probably looking at 40-45 knots in the channel, got to 4' waves in about 5 minutes.

We made out better than our neighbors about 1NM SE of us at outer harbor marina. See photos. We also saw a man down, he had been kiteboarding and was caught out, seemingly got picked up high and smacked down from what we heard, ended up unconscious in the water and was eventually taken to hospital. He's currently not in good shape and his prospects look dim. Hope he does OK.

All of Ontario was crazy windy yesterday.

Poor guy, I feel bad for everyone involved. So hard to imagine that happening while we were all having fun.

Yes, unfortunately he didn't make it. He was well liked and admired by many. More details about what happened at viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2342449 at the last post on page 4. There was another storm long ago and a near fatality at that time.

Yesterday, just south of Toronto maximum gusty winds were clocked at 141km/h (88 mph or 76 knots) in some areas!

Jason was a True Gentleman, always took time to help others. I have known him for years. He always had a positive attitude and was passionate about kiteboarding especially Kiteboardhydrofoiling. It's a great loss for the KIteboading community in the Toronto area.
We will miss you.

It was an honour to know Jason. Just so energetic and enthusiastic about the sport. Fantastic gentleman and this is truly heartbreaking.
