Wingfoilers versus Kitefoilers?

Postby Peter_Frank » Wed Nov 18, 2020 8:39 pm

Wingfoil is AWESOME :thumb:

Interested to see how many has changed to wingfoil, and how many do other sports and like them as well.
This will change over time - I will post my take on the ups and downs (for me, an old guy but a true waterman) later.

Was passionate about kitefoiling in waves. Started winging about 6 months ago and since then, wingfoil sessions=105, kite sessions=3.

Still dealing with the "kite foiling with the hand brake on" problem.

Light wind? Go out and be fully powered on a kite foil. Carving tacks and jumps. Yahoo!!!! Blast upwind to the wing foiling "secret spot". Either nobody out or people slogging around. Even the "nest" wingers are struggling.

Super strong wind? Tried wing foiling. Board turns into a missile. Wing commits harakiri on the foil. Hard work dealing with the chop. Small kite, tiny foil board. Loads of waves. Pure joy.

Moderate winds. If the direction is right charge around on the wing foil. Good fun. If there's any question about conditions then grab a kite and go.

Spent 4 days down the coast recently. Took all the toys. Either not enough wind or not enough surf for the wing. Kite foiled three days. Played in the ankle snappers on a surf mat.

Wingfoiling as much as possible unless wind is very light (kitefoil) or waves too big (surfkite).

I'm concentrating on wigsurf foiling until I have the basics mastered. Then I'll swap between them as the conditions dictate and how I feel..

Wing foil surfing and now prone foil surfing has ruined my interest in kite foil surfing. Went out the other day with my kite and all I wanted to do is cut my lines when I was on the wave. I felt so limited. Nothing beats the feeling of foiling on a nice swell/wave free to choose your lines and angles using the wave/swell as your energy source.

Kind of 50/50, mixing it up. If conditions would allow it, my first choice would be surfboard and 7m kite or less. Of course, I don't live in Lalaland, so there's plenty of suboptimal days where foiling is a magic substitute. And many days where it's wingfoiling instead of kitefoiling for whatever reasons, including, I guess, some of that novelty factor, and ability to discover or rediscover some spots.
Mixing it up keeps me all stoked, year long. Still having fun blasting around on a twintip once in a while. Just needing a bigger garage!

I got it exactly the same way, doing what is most fun each given day :D
