Wake style was a solid movement with its own aesthetic and criteria. Kite low, big slack, no dangle, stomped landings. You along with the other geesers on here used to shit all over it.

Lame as f*** to lament that now.

The trend of trashing the pro level of the sport only to elevate the dangle should be forever remembered at the true death of the sport.

Kiteboarding ate itself and you were right there at the trough with the rest of the hungry haters.

Have to disagree personally. It's undoubtedly an excellent display of athleticism but I prefer the style of lads like Tom Bridge.



Watching that old video reminds me of the difference between watching wakeboarding - boat riders vs park riders. Boat riding is athletic and hard ... but I just prefer watching the park riders. I think its because the good park riders join multiple obstacles together in a sequence whereas it feels like the boat riders are just pulling a trick, then another one, then another one, but not as a continuous sequence.

Style isnt exclusive to a discipline.

My critisism was based on this:

The death of wakestyle was due to closed mindedness imo. The very same thing happened in actual professional wakeboarding to the where they had to say - hey we cannot have all runs involving only mobes with increasing spin to wins they changed the rules. There was barely any progression for 10 years on wakestyle kiteboarding . The same set of tricks with the exception of a couple of new additions. Then came the idea of scoring kiteboarding as individual tricks with big gaps between like doing vault in gymnastics - just slowed things down to level 10 boring for viewing.

Also there was a publicly displayed elitism in kiteboarding at that time (eg kitescoop..) regarding wake style kiteboarding. But that elitism was flawed. Firstly because it added even more equipment costs to an already difficult to afford sport for young riders but also because the notion quoted by places like kitescoop that wakestyle was the hardest most hard out style of riding was a load of sh@t. A lot of this riding was done in consistent 18 knot winds... easy. The facts hit home when the Red Bull KOTA finally struck home reality that this is not the case and that this discipline is a hard out way of riding with very high risk.

And as for pro level as you called it. That always was and is (even more-so) a starry eyed lie mainly pimped by Kiteboarding media/sponsors in order to hype the sport. Actual world champions themselves were struggling to get together enough money to live off... had to actually stop the tour due to lack of funds. I had a teamrider in the PKRA, never got paid their prize money.

And today the $$$ is far worse with the GKA diluted into so many disciplines - even freestyle foilboarding. wtf And why would any one enter a comp run by the brands that are your rivals if you are not part of the consortium funding all their riders but not you. How it is still called wake style these days ... who knows.. they got their kites up at 11 oclock

Some of the wakestylers at the time were bagging anyone in straps but Ruben Lenten was apparently cool.

Kiteboarding would benefit from constantly evolving, progressing... making it exciting. Not trying to make a sport equipment focused. Having great respect for style. Giving a nod to past progression and taking it further.

Good style makes for good viewing which in turn hypes riders.

Lets get back to the most stylish tricks of all time.

There are tricks where Style Is Everything. Do it with style or don't do it at all.
Take a staple trick like a raley. Done with commitment, kite super low, good kicker or with a downloop, fully stretched out and it's very classy. Done wrong, hooked in, kite too high and rising, and it's extremely frowned upon, to the point of being called a gayley.
Maybe stylish tricks call for relatively simple tricks where grabs can be held and boned out properly. When the trick has too much happening in it, a nose grab, a pass, a tail grab, and another pass and landing wrapped, then even if the technicity is insane, there is much less room for stylishing it up.
