Front wing for Kitefoil in wave

Postby LeoLeal » Sun Dec 20, 2020 10:51 pm

Guys,
I would like to hear about your experience using your Front wing on kitefoil wave .

Which characteristics do you seek ? Why? What's your equipment?

- glide
- speed
- lift at low speed
- turnings

Pitch stability
High range of speed to allow both slow and fast riding
Balance at speed without getting front footed
Friendly behavior in whitewater
Good recovery from ventilation.
No sharps

In waves eithe Ketos WaveXL or Kool1200.

Depending on your weight, Moses 679 if you're under 85kg and Moses 633 if you're a heavyweight. Good for all the characteristics you seek.

Just an incredibly easy wings to use for surf foiling and can be tuned with different stabilisers. With a choice of carbon masts the whole setup is lightweight and strong.

However I would urge you to test all the wings you can, as what is liked by one person may not be liked by another.

Agree, except for the first one.

As I would, at least in small to medium waves, rather have a lively foil, meaning small stab.

Combined with a low AR reasonably big wing, then you got a super lively wavefoil :thumb:

It can be set quite neutral, so it wont search up nor down.

But there is a "too much", such as stabless, is not for me, too skatey and not pitch stable.

Some might want more glide, others want liveliness, and they are almost contradictory properties :naughty:

I think glide is more for wingfoiling though, and not seeked much in kitefoiling.

What happened to canard designs? I've never used one, but can see that allowing more "backfoot turning" could be helpful. You have to get used to keeping your weight forward going down a wave on a conventional foil - it's counter-intuitive. Does a canard change that?

Smaller stabs mean less drag and more glide. So you can gain maneuvering and glide.

The penalty is pitch stability.

I do see a trend on the surfing side for more glide higher aspect ratio wings.

That seems to translate over to the kite world with less kite power and more wave power when riding.

So personally I have been opting in with more glide these days.

But there are so many different types of waves, styles, and conditions that it is hard to generalize.

No difference in this respect.

Yes it feels counterintuitive when you are learning, but so did surfing when you had to learn to surf steep waves - lean forward down into the deep nothingness of air, eventhough you want to lean backwards ha haa - same thing

But a few kitefoils had a bad trim, where you had to push with your front foot at higher speeds, this is wrong of course, and same exaggerated issue when riding down a waveface with these.

I can't say I ever remember being concerned about leaning into a wave on a SB. A foil is in a different league IMO. It reminds me of skiing - people are scared to keep their weight "pointing down the mountain", they want to lean away from the slope for security.

Talking about types of waves more specific to knee low height, this is the kind of wave I have in front of my beach house, this waves has a short period and I ride a Slingshot Space Skate. What I can notice is that this wing give me a lot of turning ability, I can ride at low speed and when I approach the wave I can feel it power but just for a short period of time than the wave push me away and I have to turn back to try to catch the same wave again, but most of the time i catch another one as they are so close to each other and my Peak4 8m² doesn't turn so quickly maybe when my get 5.
In the end, I don't feel that this setup wing and wave will give the sensation that I see the guys in wing having. THE GLIDE .
Does anyone have this feeling that the wave is pushing you?

Why we don't see many videos on YouTube about kitefoil wave?
