2021 LEI kites for airstyle

Postby SMJ » Mon Jan 11, 2021 1:01 am

Happy New Year everyone,

Looking to buy a new / bigger kite for airstyle twintip. I weigh 106KG (235#). I currently own the Cabrinha AV8 14m (which I absolutely love), but a lot of days this kite is too small for our local winds when they drop below 18knots or so.

Looking for high aspect LEI kites that boost and more importantly have good hang time and are at least 15m.
Here are the high aspect lofty large kites I'm aware of other than the AV8:
Ozone Edge V10 (19m, 17m, 15m)
Duotone Rebel (15m)

[Post edited here to include suggested high aspect kites 15m or larger]:
CrazyFly Hyper (15m)
Flysurfer Boost (18m, 15m)
Airush Lift (17m)

I realize a lot of the 2021 kites aren't out yet, but any others I should be looking at now or looking forward to a future release?

Please note the topic "LEI kites." I already own a Flysurfer Soul, but foil kites just aren't for me. Please do not suggest any foil kites.

Thanks,
-SMJ

I own 3 new 2021 Rebels and the airtime is massive as they have always been, i think thats the kite for you. I also own a 15m Duotone Juice, same great hangtime!

The Ocean Rodeo aluula Flite kites might be worth a try. The regular flites had very good hangtime with a much more controllable loop than some. I imagine that a stiffer leading edge is only going to make it better and its probably going to hang in the air during lulls better than a lot of kites.

Based on the videos coming out of the duotone social media I'd probably hold off choosing duotone for a bit to see how the new models pans out as that might be a better bet for light wind airstyle?

Would it be worth it compared to the kite he already has? If you are already on the AV8 (which is not a kite I have any experience with) how many more hours would a 15m Rebel give you?

Personally "big air" with winds so marginal that a 14m AV8 isn't big enough sounds a bit zzz (unless you are Toby of course), but if the budget allows it I would be tempted to have a look at Aluula.

You don't specify weight or wind range but a with a bigger kite you don't always end up with higher jumps.

You might want to wait a bit before spending $$$$ on the aluula flite.
Keep in mind its more of a generic low wind kite and that they are not making dedicated race/boosting aluula kites YET.
They have been teased by OR but nothing about when/if they become available and with which sizes.
But since it was already teased a couple of month ago I would hope for a 2021 release.

There is also the Core XR LW range in 15/17/19.
I owned the 17 but sold it.
Its a great kite but I did not find it to add much on the low end for me and I often ended up using my 12m instead.
Could be that this is quite a bit different for a heavier rider but at my 75KG it did not add enough on the low end for me to justify keeping it.
Since its at least an hour ride to a beach I basically skipped the low wind days where I would have used it because it was to much of a gamble to drive for maybe not enough wind.
Now I am mostly on a hydrofoil so got rid of it.

Stay with high aspect wings. I think the Edge is a right call

Edge is dope, be aware that they are a disseased hooker to relaunch in low wind when they fall in the water. One of our local riders sends massive with an orbit, but he rides a 9m not sure if what the largest size they have. out of curiosity, what size foil do you have and what do you not like about it?

I’m not much of hang time addict but high aspect 9m Turbine I have kicks ass. The boosts are wild, the descent is very gradual. Yet of course looping is borderline suicidal, downwinders with lots of downloops and figure eights are not feasible and I had couple of funny relaunch moments.

Part of that behavior is the kite does not depower as much and it stays at the edge of wind window delivering awesome upwind too.

Thanks, Eugadude! I was completely unaware of that high aspect option. I'll edit original post to keep them all organized in one place for future posters / viewers.
