RRD Obsession mk10 for freeride

Postby andrewjohn » Mon Jun 01, 2020 1:08 pm

Good deals to be had on RRD equipment in the UK.
I'm currently riding a Mk8 Passion, but want to upgrade as I'm finding the passion a bit sedate now.
I was thinking of the mk10 obsession, but wonder if it might be a bit too extreme for my style.
I have good kite control and general freeride ability, try to boost and do the odd rotation etc, but don't do any unhooked stuff and probably never will.
So would the obsession be too far on the freestyle side or does it make a good freeride kite as well?

I have just bought a 7m one possibly on the same deal you are looking at (55% off). The MK 10 is more towards freestyle than the MK 8 and 9. The previous versions had a lower aspect and would probably be better for your needs, or alternatively the Vision which is an all round kite. In my one session with the 7m MK 10 I found it a bit underpowered and didn't handle lulls brilliantly. To be fair I was probably a bit too close to the bottom of the wind range and I think it will be a brilliant strong wind kite (30 knts +) and a kite I can grow into. I am going to try changing the line connection to the light bar pressure setting which might make it a bit more freeride-ey. If you do go for the MK 10 for freeride I would go a size up to normal.

I might have got high and low aspect wrong in the above comment - anyway the MK10 has wingtips with more of a square C kite shape

I ended up getting a MK11 for the same price as a ten. Love it. Not too technical at all, easy to fly and relaunches well. It’s no doubt capable of so much more than my skills allow.

Great. Out of interest what size kite did you go for?

Sorry, an old thread...I was just wondering how you have been getting on with the 7m obsession? I've had a few sessions on mine and am finding that it is super jumpy even in conditions that aren't too gusty. I took it out in 35kts, it didn't really feel overpowered but it was terribly unstable. Any tips on rigging etc? Thanks

Cheers, I'll get the 5th line rigged up and give it a go.

Sorry for my English. With 5line mode Obsession mk10 has better low end and much more stable.
