Exuma, Bahamas Kite trip?

Postby tanre » Mon Dec 16, 2019 10:52 pm

Nothing in stone, just throwing feelers out there. Anyone interested in heading down for 1 or 2 weeks towards end of January, beginning of February?

If so, comment here (maybe message me your info) and I will get back to you. Thanks.

We have a kite trip from February 20th-March 4th. The house is an amazing house with its own marina and Boat to do Moriah Cay and other excursions and offshore kite trips. If you cannot do the full 2 weeks, the last 7 nights (26th-4th) would be prefect. Need to know ASAP. Round trip tickets right now from North East are around $500. We split expenses. Estimate $100-$150/day for room/board/food/car rental/boat cost(everything).

not sure if we'll stop @georgetown/great exuma island (anchorage there gets crowded).. but the (very rough) plan is to cross yellow bank and be in the exumas by early feb..
not technically a kite trip (will be traveling via sailboat on thorn(less) path towards french antilles)... but i will have the kite gear and will foil whenever possible

there are more than 360 islands in that chain and kiteboarding(and spearfishing) paradise is found on many of them.
i could happily spend years in the exumas and not think twice about it

edit:
finally left the boat @ stocking island off great exuma..
the kitesurfing was as expected...excellent.
no waves... but the water is as clear as it gets.
however i'd strong recommend having a dingy or hired 'watch' boat available to you.. is irrelevant if wind off or on shore. the surge is the problem.
it can be tremendous at times..
and the tide either moving in our out 4x a day. (and again.. the surge of all the water will push you far offshore in a hurry

also..
if you have a shark phobia.. the exumas may not be the best choice.
the positive..
i didnt see any while foiling in PM(evenings)..

however.. in a little over a week..
while spear fishing the exact same areas in the mornings..
i saw maybe 20 or so big boys (mostly lemons..a few nurse on bottom.. 'maybe' a tiger(i didnt try to confirm..i got out of water).. and others i couldnt ID.
non of those "others" non arched their backs, swam nervously or took aggressive postures.. but due to their size i got out the water anyways.

I head there next week... check out this forecast... do I bring my 12m, or just go with the 7 & 9? 8) Seriously. I'm a lightweight at about 155lbs... I won't need the 12m unless this forecast is a total flop, and it hasn't changed in a week... in fact it's gotten even stronger.

I'm going to most likely be kiting in Emerald Bay at the Sandal's resort, but hope to get over to Cocoplum Beach where the gorgeous sandbars and slicks are. I know there's a kite beach area over by Georgetown and Moriah Harbour, but I'm not sure if I'll make it there or not. It's a pretty short trip.

Been to Exuma last xmas at Paradise Bay, Emerald Bay is only fine if the wind is at right direction but Cocoplum wow, more chances with wind direction. If I was going to open a kite school it would be at Cocoplum 😋🪁

Every time I’ve gone the forecast has been over forecasted. I personally would bring your 12 and 9 and you’ll be covered for the typical winds you see this time of year. My wife and I have been to the island 8 ish times over the past ten years and I have never used anything smaller than a 12 and I’m 170 lbs. I do prefer riding powered and the air there is very humid and warm.

Thanks Ralu81!! I appreciate the advice. I will try to bring all three kites to make sure I'm covered. 👍

Danlar, thanks for the feedback. I was in touch with Exuma kiteboarding and they said emerald Bay is good on a northeast which is what is forecast. That said, I will have to see what happens. 👍
