The really soft stuff makes it hard to slide your feet.

I’ve used EVA foam kids play mat squares and they are super comfy. Most gym mats are too thick but you can find kids mats that are only 5mm-7mm thick. They glue on well with contact cement.

Look into the new Corduroy-style deck pads.

I added the WMFG stubby six pack deck pag to my hypermiler and it made the setup a lot more comfortable. Good fit too, no need to cut - just stick it on

I have feet issues and need a soft surface, EVA grip works perfectly for me. You can go with a stock pad like WMFG or just order a square of the stuff + tail pad on amazon and cut it to suit your needs and it's a bit cheaper.
I've had good results from the Punt Surf stuff on amazon as well as some traction from Ho Stevie off amazon.
The Ho Stevie traction is a bit softer but the Punt Surf stuff seems like it will last longer.
