Aaaaaand another one.

This is the older version btw. New one should be good.

I think Mystic should issue a recall. I've seen too many broken hooks.
Ridiculous that they seemingly have fixed the new ones without telling anyone that owns the original. When it comes to safety there really isn't any excuse.
+1 Exactly this and nothing else!

I've been riding mystic gear since for ever, but shit like this kinda destroys brand loyalty as well.
They should take the loss and issue a recall, especially now with them not being completely family owned anymore. North ASG is big enough to take that hit...

What's the difference? Mine is 18 months old, so guess I have the old one! :-?
The first one I had was equipped with a smooth closing system, was hard to get open with cold hands or gloves. Then the hook broke, and I got a new one under warranty. The hook looked the same, but the closing system had a ridge now, so you had more grip. That one broke again, and I got yet again a new one under warranty.

That new one has a 'bridge' that's fully welded, so that must mean Mystic is aware of possible breakage...

That new weld will only stop the spreader bar ends compressing together. It still has the same welds onto the backing plate.

I got this spreader bar because everyone kept telling me to get it because of the wings, but I dont find the difference that great to make it a "must". It also cost 80% more than the next spreader bar!
The whole part is welded to the baseplate. Should be less prone to snapping if you ask me.

Yeaaaahhhh... this "bridge" looks like a fairly sketchy, last-minute-type patch-up...

Eh, it just needs to move away from being the weakest link in the chain. All the other failures look to have happened on or near the weld. This is a classic failure: the welds are almost always the weakest point in a uniform assembly. The intrinsic strength of the unweeded portion of the hook is so high that it will never break before your chickenloop, lines, or canopy fails.

Adding the bridge would spread the load across what looks like at least twice the area, probably three times the area. I doubt these will break again.

Not defending the way they handled this. No one has posted any communication from them recalling the gear. Ozone and Cabrinha post public recall notices that I have seem, and I have received and had parts replaced for a North problem with the Navigator bar they distributed via the retailers direct to the consumers.

Mystic should do no less. Their reputation has been solid, but this hurts that a lot.

Anyone know when their Freeride closed loop kit will be available?

I see the full Freeride Stealth bars are out, but I just want the closed freeride loop to throw on my two existing Stealth bars with "unbridged" spreader bar hooks....

Steel hooks.
Ion is currently offering a forged aluminum hook on the upper end harnesses. AFIK Cab's Fireball and Neil Pryde's Halo and Tracker spreader bars are also aluminum construction.

Flexural stress induced failure is a great reason to never use aluminum in parts that flex/bend. Steel is much more resistant and can be counted on in most cases, forever.

With aluminum, care should always be taken to calculate a lifespan vs load, and retire/replace the part much sooner than is the expected useful life.

Don't let the mtb bike industry know that! God forbid that they know that what they've been confidently relying on for 30+ years is a dysfunctional material. :naughty:
