Guys, need help with Duotone kite size

Postby newcomer » Mon May 31, 2021 5:26 pm

Hey kitesurfing fellows :superfly:

I'm a newcomer planning to buy my first Duotone kite and need your expert advice on which size to choose. I studied 11-15 m models and decided to start with the one for a calmer wind. I am from Estonia and the wind range here is 5-10 m/s or 10-20 knots. My weight is 100 kg or 200 pounds, height 187 cm.

I am considering Duotone Rebel 15 (2021). Does anyone have any experience with Duotone Rebel and would 15 be fine considering my weight and the average wind rage we have here?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts - I highly appreciate your help!

P.S. I don't consider any other brand than Duotone.

Hello.

If you check out Duotone’s wind range on the 15 Rebel, it mentions 8-20. That’s probably for an “average” weight rider, and you’re a touch heavier than that.
It will definitely help for learning in lighter winds so you won’t be struggling to maintain power.

10 knots with a heavy kite like the 5 strut rebel probably won’t be great.
It will require attention and skills like downlooping to not just fall out of the air, not great if you are learning.
Even if it gets you going, which I doubt, you won’t be able to relaunch it in deep water.
At 12 knots and a door like board the Rebel probably starts to work.
It probably can get up to 20 knots without much problems once you get a bit of skills with edging the board.

If you want something that might work in the 10-12 kn range I would look at the light wind kite from them: the juice.
It has fewer struts and lighter build will make it more stable in the air in the low end and easier to relaunch. (Will still need a door sized board)
Not sure what the top end on the Juice is but will be less then the Rebel.
If you have plenty of money you could consider waiting for the aluula version which will likely be far superior but probably close to, if not over, 3k euro.
Also if you break that aluula puppy it will be hard to fix since not a lot of places can fix aluula (hopefully that changes now that we get more brands using it).

I love the Rebel, and it is well suited for heavier riders (I'm somewhere around 100kg myself), but not sure if it is the best kite for a beginner. It is slow which makes it easy to control, but if you lose control it can be quite brutal. Not saying it doesn't work for a beginner, but it might feel a bit scary - so it comes down to your personality as well.

At 20 knots my guess is that a beginner will feel severely overpowered with a 15m. At 20 knots a 13m Rebel will be more than enough. At 15-16 knots the 13m starts to be fun for me. It would depend on how often you get 20 knots compared to 10 knots. At 10 knots it doesn't really matter though. At 100kg and on a twin tip you are not going to be able to ride.

I never ridden the Juice, but worth considering.

Get a 15m Juice and a larger board.
You need some skills to keep a 15m Rebel up in the air at 10 knots.

Exactly, the Rebel is great at smaller size, a 5 struts becomes heavy at big size. Go for the 3 struts low wind Juice.

I owns Rebel 9m 2020, Rebel 11m 2020 and the Juice 15m 2020 which is lighter the my Rebel 11m.

Happy wind day

I'm a 2020 15m Rebel owner and 100kg. It will fly in 10kn, but in no way am I riding before 13kn on dead flat water on a large board. As Harve said, at 20kn you'll be way overpowered as a beginner.

Get a Juice and a big normal board in the mid 140s x 44/45/46 for learning. If it's usually lower than 15kn, then maybe a lightwind board. Duotone's textreme Spike isn't bad, but you'll likely be overpowered in 18kn on the juice without something smaller.

How does Juice behave at 20 knots?

From 10-14 kts the Rebel is not the best kite, wait for one of the new Aluula 15m Juices. It will make a huge difference in wind that light. The Rebel is well supported but the extra struts make it heavy in the air, which starts to kill performance in wind speeds below 14 kts.

In 14-20 kts, a 13m Rebel will give you all the horsepower you want.

I currently weigh 97 kg and ride 2020 10m/13m Rebel quiver. I was weighing up to 115 kg and riding in those conditions on the 13m.

Sorry I can’t answer that, I don’t ride my Juice at 20 knots, I ride the Rebel. I know it would take it but at my weight, it would be hard to keep my stance. I am 62 kg.
