Use UPS & their App and the service (for me) was faultless - you pay VAT via the UPS website (not on the App) - they clear it through customs & deliver - I bought a new kite from the Netherlands (v long delivery dates in UK) - but buying 2nd hand means that the description & value can be...ahem.."stated".

You 'should' need to pay VAT and customs duties on it. My interpretation (based on reading the tedious online documentation) is that this would be about 20% and 2% of the total cost including postage (assuming that it falls under 'Miscellaneous watersports equipment'.
Theoretically though, if the seller made it out as a gift to you and it 'happened' to be worth less than (about as I forget the exact figure) 130 Euros then it would be exempt from the above charges. Happy days. Unless of course it gets lost or damaged in transit in which case your insurance wouldn't cover the cost.
If annoyed by this - don't spill milkshake on any UKIP people though as they are of a nervous disposition.
Edit: Handy link above for UPS!

Those Netherlands shops (**cough**cough**kitemana**cough**cough**) really provide excellent selection, prices, service and shipping. Just giving credit where credit is due.

Having recently moved to Spain from little England I can tell you the delays both ways are pretty bad at the moment . Work laptop retured to U.K. 8 weeks . 4 weeks Spain customs . 4 weeks U.K. ( with ups )
Other orders from U.K. to mainland have been stopped for weeks and ups charged 40 euro to do clearance
At the moment it seems like loads are being stopped and charged for . Often the clearance fees are more than the vat and other charges
I’d be pretty wary right now thill things settle down a bit . Btw the 130 euro exemption is going from U.K. this month
All goods whatever the value must be declared and taxes paid

Is your experience from before or after the brexit?

After . All since jan this year .
Laptop was sent back in April.
Latest giggle was leafy tea being stopped as it had no plant safety paperwork
Into U.K. from Eu is supposedly easier because U.K. are not doing much that’s all due to change end June
