Same here. I'm actually a little worse even (5.50 right eye and 5.75 left........Coke bottle contacts!)

I was doing an ocean side downwinder in Hatteras in a good N'East. Halfway through the 7 mile ride,I got rolled in a bigger wave, kite crashed into the surf, lines were a disaster and both contacts got flushed. It was the epitome of suckage.

At 5.0 prescription you are a candidate for Lasik Shawn. I love having it!

There is no brail in kiteboarding.
*Disclaimer: I sell Surf Shades*

And he brings up a good point. I had a student that apparently had terrible vision. I was on a lesson with him, chasing him around on a waverunner. He ended up out in deep water and had a massive wipeout. He informed me that BOTH of his contacts had come out and he couldn't see more than to recognize the kite in the sky as a sort of blur. I had to walk him through keeping the kite up so he could upwind body drag into the shallows where I could easily take over. Not a glasses wearer myself, that was, umm...an eyeopening experience for me. Since then, I've recommended getting a pair of Surf Shades with prescription lenses on them. One of my local friends got them and that's what he always uses now. I can't comment on how large those lenses would be based on her needs, but that one experience was enough to make me think contacts were a bit of risk. Rock on to all you guys who seem to be making that work! :thumb:

So glad to find this thread and see I'm not the only coke-bottle wearer out there on the water - I haven't met any in person yet.

I've tried everything as I've been learning to kite and crashing tons, including tying my glasses on to my head - definitely not recommended. I was wearing the Aquasphere goggles with my contacts and found they do stay on even during the most dramatic supermans, but they really restrict your peripheral vision and are just generally annoying since they're another item to fiddle around with. My last session of our recent vacation I decided to finally ditch them since it was our last day and I was having a lesson close to shore so it didn't matter if I lost my contacts. It was a totally different experience! I could actually see what was happening around me, which is pretty important.

I'm going buy some dailies online - who knew? - and take the risk that I might actually lose both at once - sounds like that's not very common anyway.

One day, its still very expensive in Canada to justify when contacts are covered under benefits!

I could buy a new quiver for the price of lasik!!!

I can't use my contacts at the moment due to an infextion :( ,and I can't use my glasses. I have ordered swimming goggles with prescription lenses and hope I can use those these weeks

I will report! Only €32.50 so my hopes aren't high.

Has anyone tried the Acuvue Oasys with Transitons contact lens?
Although they are Photochromic/transitional, few reviews suggest that they are not a replacement to sunglasses.

Any 1st hand experience with these?

I wear +3/+3,5 and have already lost a few pairs of quite expensive RX sunnies. +all the hassle that comes with wearing glasses while kiting.

That's the only mention I found here, so spare your time searching

I would always recommend wearing sunglasses when using lenses.
Water splash always gets me...and the glasses protect your lenses.
I use normal daily lenses, so if lost, not a big loss here.

I kite and do various watersports constantly all year long and I always wear contact lenses and have for 20+ years without ever losing one. Occasionally they get knocked around and need a minute of blinking but that's all.

Also the Electric JJF sunglasses with side-shields are incredible for kiting, check them out.

I use the Acuvue Oasys with Transitons and just love them.

I have used contact lenses for 40 years sailing, hard lenses in the beginning and soft lenses later on, while surfing, kiting, diving and all other sports. I think I may have lost 2 or 3 lenses during the years, never 2 at one session.

I,ve used the transition lensens for over a year and for me it's a true gamechanger. They are just great for water sports. No need for shades to loose, fog up or get salt crystals or sunscreen blocking your sight.

If I I have my eyes almost shut I can see under water too . Not better or worse than without the lenses. I don't recomend it though. It can be expensive in long run..

Only problem is that my wife don't like my black eyes.
My friends think it looks cool though. 😄

Spherical design only.

Some doctors will prescribed what is called the spherical equivalent.

But that method has it's limits to see good enough.

An RX sph -3.50 with astig -1.00
Divide astig by 0.5 = -0.50
Add it to the sph = -4.00 spherical RX
Ok for most people to see pretty good to kite.

Some people with stronger astigmatism might not see good at all.

Depends on the ratio of the sphere power vs astig.

Sphere must be quite dominant in power.

-3.00 or +3.00 sph with 0.75 astig = ok

-1.00 or +1.00 sph with 0.75 astig = no good

-3.00 or +3.00 sph with 1.50 astig = no good

-1.00 or +1.00 sph with 2.00 astig = forget it

Just some examples above.

If the lenses were quite popular they would extend the range to cover RX's with low to medium astigmatism.

Let your eye doctor trial fit you and you can decide for yourself if you are happy with the vision after going out kiting a few times.
