Carbon Fiber Control Bar Damaged from lines

Postby darippah » Sun Nov 28, 2021 4:42 pm

My control bar seems to be quickly sanding itself down from my depower line on my PKS Full Carbon KISS Bar from Kiteboarding.com

It seems they did not use wear resistant inserts for the depower line hole like many other brands do.

The bar will continue to wear and eventually snap in half, hopefully not while boosting :angryfire:

The bar is less than a year old , and I have 3 bars- one for each kite so it doesn't get a ton of usage.

I am considering reinforcing this area, but don't know what I could use that wouldn't require removing additional material from the bar.

I attached a picture below , as you can see the hole is being expanded

Any suggestions on how to reinforce this hole to prevent further damage?

A stainless insert would just give us a heavier bar and there are plenty of options in the heavy bar department.

I think your best bet is to increase lubrication on the center line. I’m using paste wax floor polish every 4-6 sessions. No bar wear for me.

Another option is to put a sacrificial layer on the bar hole that is replaced when it wears through. I would personally be inclined to try the toughest colored fingernail polish in a color that I could see when it wears through. An alternative would be a durable polyurethane paint for boat bottoms but the quantities would be much more than needed.

Plastic tube over the center line makes the bar center hole abrasion non-issue. It is also helpful preventing the line wrap around the bar.

Thank you both, I put candle wax on my center lines. Let's see how it holds up

How does one install the plastic tube on the depower line?

Core uses replaceable bar inserts for just this reason. Perhaps you could use Core's or adapt a similar product for your use.

Hard wearing 2K PU coat can be good solution and :thumb: for Jake's tip for having it in colour so you see when it wears out.
I had a set of carbon foil wings painted white - I could sand off scratches without being worried about sanding off the carbon.

There are also UV curing hard paints, incl fingernail top coat.

I made some carbon bars for myself, the best solution i found was to make a hard epoxy coat that I replace every year, no more wear issues for me

Will epoxy Wear better than Carbon fiber? because the CF wore down quickly

I just put some JB weld on the insert area in addition to the Candle wax on the center line. Hopefully this does the trick !

Hello your bar looks very weakened if it snaps fiber splinters really cut badly and are X-ray transparent…
It would not cost much to build a new one with a thicker tube , one with 2mm walls at least.
For the center I used fiber rolled tightly with epoxy, compressed in a length of 10 cm , after sanding the tube inside.
Drilled and filed polished.
Very sturdy, but on the heavy side - a bit like myself. But safe.
