2022 What is the new best 17m tube kite for big air?

Postby Guttorm » Mon Jan 17, 2022 5:33 pm

I am 112kgs & 202cm and wants to change a 2016 Xr4 17 into something new & better for TT riding in 15-28 knots
I have Xr3 9, Xr4 11, 13,5, 17 Edge 19
I like to go fast with a lot of power.
Thinking about a Xr7, but there are several other brands that have lighter models, are they any better?
Please help.

You want to ride 17m LEI in 15-28kts? Or this is whole wind range for all your kites?
As for best kite in 17m I would put my money on Ocean Rodeo Aluula Flite or DT juice D’Lab.
I much prefer LEI than foil kites since I owned one for 3 years but for more than 15m I would prefer to have Soul than any LEI in such a large size

My kites give me the range from 11-50 knots
So yes the 17 is for 15-28 knots 🤙

Guttorm,
Welcome to the club! There are a bunch of bigger guys on this forum in search of the same kite you're looking for. I'm 104kg and enjoy Airstyle and going big, but to be honest I still haven't come across a 17m I'm completely happy with.

I can't recommend the 17m XR6 (which I currently own). I have not flown the 17m XR7 yet, so can't comment if it's been improved. The 17m XR6 falls out of the sky during lulls (it's quite heavy for a "light wind" kite), and it doesn't have much range (tops out around 19 mph). It also jumps much more horizontally (downwind) than its 15m counter-part. The 17m does, however, have excellent hang-time.

I also currently own the 15m XR7 (and previously owned the 15m in XR6 and XR5 models). The 15m XR (in all models I've flown) is an absolute gem - quite possibly one of the best Airstyle kites currently on the market. But to me, it's a completely different kite from the 17m. The 15m is faster (obviously), lighter on the bar, jumps straight up vertically, and has a HUGE wind range.

So unfortunately, I don't have any good recommendations for you - just steering you away from the 17m XR6 (again I have not flown the 17m XR7). I've recently been looking at the GTS 17m, but haven't gotten a lot of feedback on that kite on this forum.

I think Core could get it right if they lightened up the 17m XR (less struts and / or lighter materials). Perhaps they'll jump on the Aluula train in the future.

If you come across a 17m Airstyle / big air LEI kite you really like please share!!! Until then...the search goes on.

I recall someone boosting in light wind TT on our lake with Ozone Zephyr.
Did you consider cabrinha contra or duotone Juice ?
Fewer people now are using big kites with the development of foiling, so second hand they can be good deals.

The Contra is a medium aspects SLE construction so it is less efficient at going upwind with speed compaired to Delta/Bow kites, so not on my list.

I say you are looking for a unicorn, once you find it share a picture of it 8)

Soul 18m would meet this criteria of this massive wind range but it comes with some cons as well

You can definitely boost with the Zephyr, but I can't compare it with other kites - as I have never been on a big kite other than the Zephyr. In terms of range I think it is fairly spot on. I would struggle to ride mine in 28 knots, but I got a slightly old model - so with a bit more skill and maybe a newer model it might work. We aren't too far from each other in terms of weight - I'm typically around 100kg - so 15-28 should be possible.

I have just ordered an Edge v11 13m which I'm planning to replace my Zephyr with. If you want more power I could see the Edge 15m might working? Theoretically speaking that should be a nice kite between a Core 13.5 and the 19m Edge. But I guess the same goes for a XR7 - and I can't give any input to how good those kites are.

I'm expecting to lose a bit of low end replacing my Zephyr, but I don't think it is all that much fun riding in 15 knots any longer anyway. Getting to 20knots and up I'm "sure" (hopefully at least) I'll have more fun on a 13m Edge than 17m Zephyr - even if the Zephyr is great in 20 knots as well.

Jumping on my Zephyr is quite interesting. It pulls like a truck so edging isn't the easiest. Decent "yank" launching, but not as brutal as for example a Rebel. Height is good, but not brilliant vs. a more specialized "big air" kite. At least that is how it feels as I have never measured. Hang time is good to very good. And I'm pretty sure my Zephyr is faster than a 13m Rebel (2019) I borrow from time to time. So a very good kite overall I would argue, but if the Zephyr is your best option or not I couldn't say.
