G arcs Vs LEI for high end Gusty wind.

Postby EdDy_DiFfUsIvItY » Fri Jun 11, 2004 10:47 am

Was down at our local spot last night, wind was crap, 18 - 31 mph.
LEI's jellying all over the place, gettin big bad dimples in the canopy in response to the forward backward motion caused by the intense gusts.

G Arc - dead stable.

Whats the catch ? I must say I was impressed by the G10. All the LEI guys had leashed or come in, but these 2 guys were rippin like there were no gusts.....

Omygawd, ronneeee goes totaly foil, I told ya not to git that mastair mate
:bye:
The trick with GARCs is that when the wind goes outa their sails and the lines go slack they flatten out, the tips float up and tension the lines again, nice kites but if the wind is totally crap you can see even a G10 fold up even with an experienced rider. Practically impossible to stuff jumps and make em luff

Hey Oj Man,

Not quite gone totally foil, still loving those Best kites, I was tinkin about the Gee Gee for our stormy gusty stuff when it comes through like last night. Got plastered with a 9m mach 1 in 3 m waves as the sets just wouldnt let up and give you any space, 3m with 3m in between. plus wind that went 15 mph over the ambient.

All the LEI guys leashed em as I said earlier. only thing left on the good stuff were the Arcs.

ttfn my fine foily friend. :thumb:

Mate o mine just got the 9 GII, we were out a few weeks ago with that and the 7m spirit, both kites are about 6-6.5m projected, both really stable, very few kites on the water, very gusty 20-35 knots, he was using the 9 on 20m lines and weighs about 70kgs

It's a nice feeling when you're out there and suddenly you notice that all the LEI guys are gone...

/looking for somebody with a Guerilla II 13 who wants to trade it for my Dream 12

He he...
I know have 3 GII !
The 9 is a killer one. Damm fast and so stable..
You can really go in crazy winds with this one.
Some of my fellow LEI friends are really considering adding this little beast
as their high wind kite !

Any Gorge or Oregon Coast G-Arc enthusiasts out there? I've never seen one of these kites in action, I'd like to check it out...

I love my bigger infatables, but I could see how there might be a better technology for strong and gusty.

Hi,
at any extrenme gusty wind, high AR Lei is not best choice.
LowAR is more stable.
Psycho2 is my answer to gusts.
At my favourite thermal wind spot, a Lei is usually around 5-10min in the air before stalling. Almost never relaunch, because at this spot you drift out of the wind very fast.!
Ps2 might collapse every 3hours in the same conditions.
I let it fly all the time, for hours,
while the Leis are falling from the sky as soon as they start.
Arc never collapses but is extreme difficult and dangerous to start in high windspeed gusts.
And they might loft you more than other kites.
Arc is good in medium sizes, as they need less wind, so a bad launch aint kill you- at least the kite wont fast fly spirals towards next street.
Yes I know how to proper launch an arc.
I fly arcs since several years.
If you kite at the sea and have a lot of space, Garc is a good choice.
If there are trees around, sharp rocks and turbulent winds,
you might experience difficulties with arcs.
I use the G1/10 too, but not at gusty and dangerous spots.
Starting a voodoo or titan or ps2 was never a problem in the same conditions.
have fun,
Thisl

I borrowed a GII 13m a few weeks ago. I found it good, but a bit different from LEIs.
It was very very stable though.
I Launched it with the lines all wrong (told you it was different).
OK, in control. Put kite at zenith
Hooked into the depower strap
UNDID the back lines
Sorted out the lines and reattached them !
All the time the Arc did it's own thing above my head. Wind was gusty too.

Can't say I'd even thought this was possible. If I was starting again, I'd probably go Arc for the convenience and stability. The Arcusers rave about the G10 in big winds. Notably, Lachlan said LEI in big sizes, Arc small sizes was ideal. I'm not clever enough to switch between them.

Definitely worth a try though.

yep, i've done this when i get a twist in the lines, it's so simple so long as you don't pull the other line by accident:D

as for arcs they are by far the best turbulent wind absorbers i have ever flown - my 13m is my high wind kite, not nuclear but i would be fairly happy getting out on the water with it in winds around the 30mph mark (i weigh about 10st) - they are best ridden lit out of your mind, too many people fly them in low winds and say they won't turn / feel spongy etc etc, but when they get a go powered up it's a totally different story

the guerilla is something of a revolution in my university club, i've lent it to about 10 people, 7 of which have bought arcs of their own as a result, that says it all really :thumb:
