Tofino B.C. kite trip june

Postby alankitesurf » Mon Apr 04, 2005 1:19 am

Any info on kiting near Tofino B.C. in early June? We are coming up from Oregon - are wind conditions and beaches similiar to Oregon Coast? Thanks for any info!

Bring your surfboards! Wind in the summer at Tofino is rare. Generally it's only fronts that cause wind there and in the summer often it gets high pressure systems locked in for extended periods.

Sandy beaches are 'similar' to Oregon coast but you get far more wind in Oregon.

What about Mid September in Tofino. I'm heading up that way next week. Wondering if I shoud try for Tofino or Nitinaht?

best season for wind in tofino is Spring. June is getting a little late, but doable.
Works somewhat often in fall too, and the swells feel a little more powerful.
All NW winds. Cox bay and North chesterman work well.

the best seson is Winter, big waves - but you need to know where to go to catch SE winds right.

I was at Nitinat a few weeks ago and it had already shut down for the season. Tofino had good surf though. Have fun.

I checked the Nitinaht webcam a few times the last few days and I've seen some whitecaps. No kites but it looked windy. Heading up Tues and I'll prolly hit the OR coast on the way up from SF.

k-star-- What do you mean by "it was already shutdown for the season" services at the lake or the wind?

If there's no wind I'll have my fishing poles as backup.

Thanks,

DDD

DDD, I was talking about the wind. There had been some rain and one of the instructors that work out of Nitinat was leaving for the season and said once it starts getting wet, the thermals are weak. You might get lucky.

Nitinat can be great in September. As long as high pressure dominates and you don't get unseasonal, cool and rainy weather it will blow.

Cheers,
